I'm more of a snapshot-taker than a photographer, but would advise you to have a look round Flickr for more Second Life collections, and also check out the my.secondlife.com feeds (look at "trending" where people upload photos directly from inworld to their SL feed using the Second Life official viewer).  All can give you much inspiration.

Make full use of the lighting presets you can find also with the Firestorm viewer. And did you know, you can upload directly to Flickr from inworld with Firestorm viewer? 

youtube has plenty of tutorials on how to get the best out of gimp and other photo packages. Patience, I think, is key to it all (which I don't have much of, hence why I am just a snapshot-taker).
