Never got Welcome Island when I first logged in?

Not sure where I landed, but it wasn't Welcome Island, haha. Was confused for awhile and wandered around, then just gave up after attempting to teleport 'home'...I think I failed. I'm not too sure. LOL.

So now I'm not really sure what to do. Help?

I had this same problem. Was a really confusing frustrating experience! Someone directed me to Orientation Island and I just took things from there.

Second Life  has never been easy to start and such 'welcome areas' as Linden Lab provide are notorious for the bad behaviour of the people who hang around in them . Choose the menu World > World map.  Half-way down the world map on the right are three "Find On Map" options.  Type 'kuula' and click 'find'.  click 'teleport',

This is the home of NCI - New Citizens Inc, a volunteer helper organisation in-world.  Go West across the road to join the other people there and ask all you want :-)
