There are a lot of free things in SL that you can use to put together an avatar but no one is going to hand you an avatar exactly like you want for free.

Start by using Google to find blogs dedicated to free clothing and avatar components.  You can also search the Marketplace for free items.  Many in world stores have gifts available for free, some only available for avatars less than 30 days old and others available only if you join the shops group.  You will also find freebie stores using inworld search, although a lot of what they have for free is not the best quality or it is outdated, IMO.

Depending on free items will take some time and work on your part searching them out.  Whether you can put together the exact look you want is another matter, since selection will be limited and sometimes the free things are outdated.  However there are also some quality items available for free and the blogs will tell you where.

The easiest way to put together the exact avatar you want is to buy the items.  Buying L's is pretty cheap You can get as much as $247L's for $1US currently on the Lindex.  The time you spend searching for free things in SL could be much more profitably spent working a few extra hours in RL and using the money to buy Lindens.  A lot of people also will give up something once or twice a week in RL, such as lunch out, forgoing that espresso, skipping a night out in RL, etc.  Such small sacrifices can yield enough L's for you to live well in SL.

No, LL only takes PayPal or a credit card.  However some Third Party Resellers may take a prepaid card.  Here is a list of authorized resellers.

If you can afford 5L, 7 Deadly Skins fee for their group is 5L for the month. She has an advent calendar up with lots of skins in it as well as monthyly free skins.
