I have seen completely free (and cute) cabins as well as often listed free apartments for new folks. There are almost always places for $1 per prim allowance which is "cheap" in SL. The best thing to do in my mind is to keep looking through SEARCH and the classified rentals (in my viewer that is the button that looks like a spy glass).

 

I have spent whole days just looking at what is available and now and then you get lucky. And along the way you get a sense of the communities around, what you do and don't want -- for now and in the future. If you are new, you will have more opportunities as there are places that are free or very cheap that ONLY rent to new folks.
