It's sort of like what Dilbert said accept if you do it that way you end up with multiple textures so, instead of just drag and drop try going to the texture tab and drag and drop on to the texture. Then to make it show under your name create a new simple prim, name it what you want, copy paste the position of the mesh onto the new prim make it 100 percent transparent. After reselect the mesh and then after you select the mesh select the prim then link. Not only have you retextured your mesh but you also set yourself as creator.
