You did indeed (continuation of http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Viewers/i-get-a-black-and-grey-screen/qaq-p/1510227) and in the mean time I was checking people with a similar problem :-) (It probably doesn't affect this issue but don't trust "my connection is fine", speed alone can be very misleading.)

Anyway:

Nearly all the answers are use a different viewer and/or update drivers, which you say you've done.

http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Viewers/Answer-for-the-Black-Screen-Question/qaq-p/943765 ad others suggest there's a conflict between anti-aliasing and shadows.

I am still looking for a definitive fix but at least you know you aren't alone.  ATI cards do seem to have more trouble with SL than nVidia, and do you have a twin-card setup there?  I have no idea but that may cause issues too.
