Oh, and that roundtable discussion he promised, yeah, that's not happening either

rodvik.linden Hey folks, as I mentioned to some of you over the weekend I am going to do the next roundtable stuff in private one on one's rather than as a free for all. That makes it more low key and doesnt turn it into something which is contentious. Thanks for all the feedback.

So that's cool and all, except that it is another broken promise, it is not a round table, and I doubt he will have the time to speak to everyone one on one.

Char- let me know when you get your invite, and I will let you know when I get mine.

They claimed it was an educational portal but were advised not to reveal which otherwise the site would shut down almost immediately because of the barrage of persons signing up for last names.

I give the same advice if someone finds one- I just wish I knew it ! I'd make a few alts to hold me over....

<snark>I wonder, should I start "selling" my alts with last names? there a market for that?</snark>

  3. Rodvick would do well to look and see what happpened to the last CEO the residents hated- the one who brought us this disaster of no last names and Linden homes and the terrible interface of V2/V3.

Rodvick- we all had high hopes when you came here. REAL experience with a REAL game company- Then you went and told us that you were going to work out a solution... a "dash" is not a solution.

A second data entry field to take last names *IS* a solution. You know, the one that's still there and was used just the other day by Mr. Hurricane?

Get a better IT staff that's not afraid to work for a living.

    • If you need to recycle names, purge the user DB of anyone who has not been logged in say for more than 3 years

no. No. no. Unequivocal NO.  This can lead to people THINKING they are talking to their old friends but not. Old users with brands can be misrepresented as CURRENT purveyors. and it's completely unnecessary with the last name paradigm,.

The previous implementation required the "first last" name combination to be unique, which quickly leads to exhaustion of name space for popular (and common) name combinations. So unless there is a solution to this, freeing old name space may be an option.

There is a limit on last names? A continuation of adding new last names as the old last names fill up is an easy enough solution.  Smith is full? Add Jones... and so on.

The lack of last names now is what's causing a namespace issue.  Before the last names were hidden, Namespace was limited only by imagination of last names.

What we DID see is that the namespace was filling up because no one was making new last names. (The Linden who was responsible for it was laid off.)

This, of course, leaves another great opportunity for volunteerism- Residents can come up with creative last names.  Volunteer programs are, sadly, lacking in SL. (Anyone remember mentors?)

So.. after this change is implemented, will I be able to change my name from "RoderickVaughn Resident" to "Roderick Vaughn", as it should have been in the first place? Or will it have to be "RoderickVaughn Somethingelse"?

I hate the thought of having to start up a whole new avatar just to get the right name.

No one knows yet, they are trying to come up with an Oh Wow plan.

Don't worry- you can use a nickname to make your name look right and then we can all vote and make you look very silly with an insulting title.  The best thing will be when most of the screen will be covered with out names.

I can agree with having Resident as a surname, among us, there is a certain honor at having been introduced to this world as a second class citizen. It has caused some of us to learn how to cope with discrimination based solely on the fact that we are not allowed proper names. Being able to have our last names reflect this dark time of Second Life's history would be a kind of badge, I would think.

OK- we need a love button in the focums.... I'll let us be like FaceBook there.... Awesome view.

Could they fix it? Yes, but it isn't as easy as it seems on the surface.

You are incorrect.  They could turn on last names today. Alternate registration sites still USE last names. There is no complex development needed. They just need to display the dropdown instead of shoving Resident in there for everyone.  Why do the viewers not show "Resident" as a last name on the screen? Cause it's filtered out.  In the database Resident is the last name.

  8. Here is what Rodvik Linden, the CEO of Second Life, said about titles:

"Thanks all. yeah its a sensitive topic we want to get right. There are many people who really dislike having a last name forced on them from a list on the other hand there are many who love having that last name bond. As for titles, I hear you on the competition thing but there are perhaps other cool ways of getting things as an option fi you want. Length of being a customer etc."

This is SL not Facebook- no matter how much you want it to be.  SL shouldn't be a Zynga game any more than I want Zynga to put out "MobWars 3D"

  9. Rodvik,

What a terrible mess is being made out of something so straightforward.

    1. Modify website to have a dropdown of surnames

    2. let people use it.

We KNOW the backend still exists, because the alternate signup sites offer last names.  What we don't know is why LL refuses to jsut put the box back on their own page.

You want to work on fancy titles and other stuff? Awesome- work on it- but don't cause more and more damage to the community by not turning on surname functionality. As you wait new users are registering more and more rediculous names in order to find something unique.  GET THE SURNAME BACK NOW!

I could rant on how terrible the idea of users voting on titles are- and the terrible stigma and popularity contest that would be created.  SL gives everyone an even place - we can all be attractive, nice hair, etc. The popularity in our "circles' is based on our personality... Removing surnames segmented the social community that is Second Life.  Adding "supurlatives" would only make it more segmented and cliquish.  Like I said- put the surname dropdown box on the website immediately, then open a discussion with the community about these other changes you want to make.

  10. The creator was in search last night- so that they are gone is a good sign.  I submitted another 20 AR's tonight-  basically they want AR's so they can find em and clear em.  For some reason they can't clean them through a gridwide blacklist.  The problem is that Pini was cleared- and then it was re-infected since it's self-replicating.

  11. I will say that my continued discussions with the Linden handling my ticket has assured me that the absue team and those that need to clean this up are now very aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. As such- I can now calmly wait for the problem to be resolved!
