There are lots of real estate businesses that would love to help you find the land you want. You can find them through inworld search, Facebook groups, Discord servers.

I think part of the problem is that, whilst SL can be used for that kind of social activity it's pretty inconvenient in comparison to just finding an online forum or Discord server dedicated to just about any given topic of interest, which will both have a much larger reach and doesn't tie you up to an appointment at 3 AM because you're in the 'wrong' time zone to participate.
Hosting a gathering during the time zone when you're most likely to be active in world, will attract people who are online during the same hours you usually are. I've found that Discord is great for the gaming community, but isn't going to help you find friends in SL. Maybe I'm not in the right servers, but my experience in Discord channels created for SL is the same as yours in SL clubs. "I hate Mondays" memes, lots of coffee references and endless advertisements.

Sometimes you have to take the initiative. Host an event. It doesn't require a premium account, you don't have to own land and it's relatively cheap to list events on the LL page. Have a discussion group, create a topic you have an interest in.
Get a job or start a business. Working in SL is a great way to socialize and network. I've met some of my dearest friends in SL while "working."

yea, looking back, there might have been more cost effective ways I could have done my SL. I just never realized how much I was spending until I recently added it all up.
There's no way I'd go back and look at how much I've spent. I'm sure it would lead to sleepless nights and a fresh bout of depression lol.

Just started this recently. I know I'm late to the game. I hope this isn't a reflection of real life in the UK because I'm only on season 2 and I've already developed a phobia of hammers.
