Thank you for taking the time to explain the types of land and land ownership in Second Life. I think this is a confusing subject for many, and not only the new residents, but even some who have been here for quite some time. While generally very well writtien, I want to note a couple of passages and comment, if I may. "When you buy a mainland parcel, you are buying the leasehold for that parcel. Since Linden Lab owns the freehold for the sim, you can be confident that 1) you own the leasehold for as long as Second Life exists, 2) you can resell the leasehold easily (set land for sale) and 3) Linden Lab will not arbitrarily cancel your leasehold and eject you from your land. The drawback is that you must have a Premium account to own a mainland parcel. When you buy an estate parcel, you are buying the leasehold for that parcel. Since an individual (not Linden Lab) owns the freehold for the sim, you must remember that 1) you do not own the leasehold in perpetuity and 2) the estate owner may arbitrarily cancel your leasehold and eject you from your land. When you buy a mainland parcel, you are buying the leasehold for that parcel. Since Linden Lab owns the freehold for the sim, you can be confident that 1) you own the leasehold for as long as Second Life exists, 2) you can resell the leasehold easily (set land for sale) and 3) Linden Lab will not arbitrarily cancel your leasehold and eject you from your land. The drawback is that you must have a Premium account to own a mainland parcel. When you buy an estate parcel, you are buying the leasehold for that parcel. First, its not a certainty you can be confident in number 1 and number 3. Second Life is wholly owned by Linden Lab, and the Lab can change the rules at any time. While I agree it is not likely they will do so, anything that is not impossible is possible. As for number 3, I don't own mainland, so I'm not sure how much easier it is to resell than private estate leaseholds. I think it would have been more accurate to mention that the ease of reselling a leasehold on a private estate varies, with some estate owners allowing it, and some not. As to the second paragraph, if it is not impossible for the same thing to happen with mainland, the statements seem to be inflamatory. And yes, I will admit it is more likely to lose leaseholds on a private estate, but I'm not sure I agree with characterizing it as "arbitrary" since the vast number of lost leaseholds have to do with region owners not being able to afford their own tier payment to Linden Lab and abandoning the land. Next: "Needless to say, the owners of large estate continents have spent years building good reputations. In a competitive market, their survival depends on honesty, integrity and sterling customer service. Yet, should some extraordinary event occur (the RL death or bankruptcy of an estate owner), it is possible for an entire continent to evaporate. To the best of my knowledge, this has never happened. What has happened, frequently, is for a small-scale estate owner to arbitrarily cancel a leasehold and eject a person from his land, sell the sim without warning, abandon a sim or simply wipe it clean and keep it for himself. There have also been instances of deliberate fraud whereby estate parcels have been sold on the pretext of selling the freehold for the parcel." Okay, maybe because I'm a small estate owner, I am offended by this just a bit, but since the impetus for me buying my first region was that the large estate from whom I was renting closed down the region where I had my home, I think its a disservice and prejudicial to imply that the only problem is with small-scale estate owners. There have been several frauds committed by large estate owners as well as small. Is it more likely for a small scale operation to go out of business? Yes, I would say it is, especially for those of us who came in late in the game and don't have the benefit of grandfathered tiers (a benefit that should have ended when all the old class 4 servers were updated). Your article is very good in explaining ownership and leaseholding. I just wish you would have left out the prejudice.

Okay, I've been accused before of not paying attention to announcements, but did I miss something? Why do Private Estate parcels have to be listed as for rent and not for sale? We have long made a distinction between selling land on private estates and renting it, with the implcation being that someone who buys the parcel gets "full rights" and someone who rents does not. A person looking for land and coming to these forums will see they can 'buy" land on the mainland, but only "rent" land on private estates. Somehow, that just doesn't seem fair to me. I'm interested to know what others might think.
