After being in SL several years now, I rarely play human. There's so many opportunities to be anything you want here from mythical creatures, anime characters, animals, etc. and so many opportunities to roleplay that you don't have to be stuck being human. However, for some it's fun to dress up your avatar and roleplay as human in family rp, etc. As the others have said it's just trial and error but I think it's when you get stuck on one particular thing that you get bored and quit the game all together.
