  1. Hello, Thank you again for participating in the survey. Some of you requested that I forward a copy of my paper when it's done. Here is the link you can retrieve it from. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/262013029_Running_head_BODY_IMAGE_AND_SELF-REPRESENTATION_1_Under_Construction_Body_Image_and_Self-Representation_in_Virtual_Worlds_partial_fulfillment_of_the_requirements_for_PSYC4170F Regards
  2. When the paper is written at the end of March, I'll try and figure out a way to make it downloadable or I will contact everyone who has expressed interest and send a copy.
  3. :-) I haven't been in-world much since I went back to school last year, in some ways when I do pop in I feel like a noob. For example mesh was just starting to become popular. I need to relearn a lot of the basic mechanisms, b/c Pheonix isn't supported anymore. I know Firestorm is similar. I would like to cite your blog entry would you prefer it cited with your SL name?
  4. I actually thought about platform a bit with the lag and mechanic questions in the presense section, but didn't really expand on that. Mesh is another factor that I will need to bring up in my discussion and limitation section. Thank you for bring these to my attention, they will make the discussion section richer.
  5. In my literature review, I found many studies that speak about the "intertwining" of AV and operator. Sorry ATM can't think of a better word
  6. Thank you for taking the survey, your feedback and the link. The last will make for a good read this evening after just briefly skimming through it. This particular research course focuses on the quantitative approach in order to familiarize us with empirical study design. I have taken a qualitative research course in the past, and incorporating the feedback I've received will make sure that any future research will be more balanced to both methods. I would love to conduct in world interviews with those who have taken the time to answer; but, I have guaranteed people anonymity and so far most participants have relied on that. I appreciate everyone's time and I don't want to cause any extra work for anyone, but I do invite those who have more to say to do so. I am wondering if you and others who wanted to comment, might email me your comments whether on particular question(s) or just broad comments and I will endeavour to incorporate them in the final write-up. I can send a blank list of questions so no one need go back in to the survey. This would allow those who do wish to remain anonymous to do so.
  7. Thank you for taking the time to do the survey and to leave me feedback. It was pointed out to me after the survey started that I had not considered all gender options, and that I should have left some room for comments. I cannot however alter the survey midway as to correct my oversights could skew the data, however, I will be mentioning this oversight on my part in the discussion/limitations section of my paper, and will be cognizant to be more careful, when conducting research in the future.
  8. I would be happy to share the paper, it will be submitted at the end of March.
  9. :-) yes rereading question 18b I see the confusion, I can't change it now that the survey is in progress, but will account for it in by discussion at the end of my paper.
  10. Thank you for your participation, and kind words about the survey. I too hope to do well. If you wishe a final copy of my paper just email me, I haven't offered it as an option, in order to maintain confidentiality.
  11. Hi Drake, Thanks for your question. I had thought about offering a small renumeration when I started the project, but as I want to guarantee anonymity I was unable to do so.
  12. Hi, I just wanted to clarify, I am not affiliated with Linden Labs in any way. This research is in partial fulfillment for an undergrad degree, and will not be used commercially in any way.
  13. Thank you for participating, I appreciate your time and your thoughtful feedback. I have spent some time in SL though not since I returned to school last year. I will definitely incorpororate your suggestions in to future work, particularly those pertaining to gender.
  14. Thank you for taking the time to participate, I appreciate you having some fun with it :-)
  15. I would be happy to provide you a link or a copy of the paper when it is done. I will be submitting the final paper at the end of March.
  16. Thank you for taking the time to participate, and to offer suggestions. I love your suggestion for an essay portion, and I will definitely keep it in mind if I am excepted in to grad school and continue my research in more depth.
  17. I appreciate your position that you charge companies to conduct research for them, and thus do not provide your time for free. This research is for fulfillment towards an undergraduate degree and not for commercial purposes.Thank you for taking the time to respond to my request, most would have just ignored, your suggestion for collecting qualitative data in the future is a good one Regards
  18. Hello All! I am an undergraduate student at York University. My name is Lara (BellaClair Mynx in-world) and I can be contacted at leb@yorku.ca I am taking an undergrad research course. As a course requirement, I am working on a project entitled “Under Construction: Body Image and Self Representation in Virtual Worlds.” I am collecting information on how people represent themselves through their avatars in Second Life. • You will need to have Second Life open to answer some of the questions. • Additionally, you will be required to upload a headless picture of your avatar. Questions do not ask for confidential self or avatar identifying information. Your responses will only be used for this study and no future studies or commercial purposes. I am therefore asking if you would agree to participate in my research by answering the questionnaire. The questionnaire has (60) questions and should take about (10-15) minutes to complete. The survey will be conducted using SurveyGizmo, a cloud web-based survey solution. To help protect your confidentiality, all IP addresses, geo-location etc. are hidden from both me and the company. I can tell you that your response may be included in the paper I will write at the conclusion of this assignment. There are no foreseeable risks involved in participating, however some may find questions about image uncomfortable. Here is the URL should you choose to participate http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1505307/Under-Construction-Body-image-and-Self-Representation-in-Virtual-Worlds If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at leb@yorku.ca or my professor, Alistair Mapp at amapp@yorku.ca THANK YOU in advance for your help.
