  1. no arguments there gadget, and I don't expect others to have the same limits I do. just trying to push people towards the larger data picture.

    @Pussycat

    It's a popular number, but after lots of digging no one seems to know who threw it out there, whether it applies to pure script memory, the VM,, both, or some internal pool.  it does seem to be an agreeable figure for some basic calculations though

    @Randall:
    ARC is problematic in that it's calculated relative to the local hardware, and the same things seen by two people can have wildy different scores, and the scores don't seem to translate from one user to another.... plus the fact that there is no automated way to compare the impact (because you have to look up scores manually). not that it can't be useful, but it's a matter of local (to the end user) impact, versus impact to the entire region

  2. depends... I never go by script count alone, but take into account memory, and activity... I ignore anything under a cap of 10MiB if it seems they aren't the source of the problem.... but someone can have much less and if it's abusing physics can crap out the region, and then I don't care what their script count or memory usage is.

    I'm a firm believer that knowledge is power, so script usage boards that have detailed information, I don't see that as name an shame, but rather educational. I am not a fan of auto-boot systems, unless the values are obscenely outside reason, and even then I think people should be warned or informed.

    I do however feel that as a land manger if I politely ask someone to check their scripts because the amount or nature of them is causing a problem, and the person comes out with the attitude that they're entitled to use as much as they want on their avatar, I am fully justified in booting them with the response that I'm entitled to designate what's acceptable on that land. if it's not my land, I'll refer it the land owner, and that's their discretion, and none is available I'd feel no remorse in ARing for abuse of resources.

  3. if I understand correctly, you are looking at optioning between an actual notecard, versus an outside script that contain the notecard information (either directly or as it's own notecard reader)?

    overall memory consumption goes up with the external script model, but obviously internal memory to the main script stays down. personally I prefer to lower the script count, but if you are running out of memory for the main script in doing so there may not be much choice in the matter

    for purposes of maintainability, the single script model wins if you can squeeze it all, since you don't have to update two different sections of scripting, nor deal with with transport between them.

    and unless the values are trivial, I don't recommend using an editable script, simply as an ease of use issue for the users, since they are more sensitive to errors, where if you read from a notecard, you can include some levels of error checking.

    depending on how you structure your notecards, you can also include sections that are temp read and then discarded by the script until needed again, although building that way can have some high overheads (but lower instantaneous memory consumption)... that's largely dependent on what the data is and how it's used though.

  4. I think maybe she was more upset at me that he heard it than that I said it...

    The opposite scenario happened when my father told me I could talk to him about anything... so I started talking about my period.... apparently he was more forgiving though and only ignored my mom for two weeks.

    ETA:
    which was how long it took before my mom stopped laughing and mimicking the look of pale horror on his face.

  5. Economic downturn. (it's hard enough to get a job without tattoos on your face)

    it does remind me of a day I know my mom didn't love me.... She was yelling at me for taking too long in the shower and using all the hot water... I snapped back that I didn't harass her when she played with her toys, so why should she harrass me when I played with mine. she didn't talk to me for a week.... of course she didn't talk to my dad for a month because he laughed when I said it.

    @Perrie:
    as demonstrated above Valerie seems to have figured this out already on her own =D

  6. I'll have to disagree that it was proven less profitable at the time, the north was far more industrialized at the time, and had the infrastructure in place, whereas the south did not. transitioning that even without the civil war would have proved extremely costly to the south, and proved even more costly with the war. Not to say that it shouldn't have been done, with that portion I have no argument. but it's naive to say that slavery was the only cause... interstate recognition of laws, protective taxes, non-suport on the frontiers, federal authority, and several other issues pushed non-slave states to align either with the confederacy or as (at least initially) neutral secessionists. If anything it's revisionist to ignore those other causes.

    I don't see that acknowledging one takes away from the other, or even that noble principles can't be abused to support ignoble actions. For instance the topic of this thread... driven by the noble principle of preventing theft, but abused to lend itself to unaccountability and censorship. I'm all for the spirit of it, but violently against the means proposed by SOPA to enact it. To me it's a clear case of the cure being worse than the disease... the real solution is to find a better cure.

    @Storm
    now that's revolutionary thinking.... bravo =D

  7. I'm using that supposition that in many cases the float will be converted to integer... but that only gets to happen if the float range doesn't exceed the integer range.

    as for your results... precision for floats of 32bits is only 24bits, or just over seven significant digits of absolute accuracy. one of the other may be using 64bits behind the scenes to better approximate the float giving slightly different results past the 7th digit (or they may be using different rounding models), so not so much bug, as inconsistency.

  8. 'twasn't the only state right in question, and the history on both sides isn't nearly as neat a picture as our school books paint it. Over a third seceding were non slave owning states, largely in reaction to to the idea of using force to stop secession. and there were even slave holding states on the Union side (though deeply divided internally). there were complaints a many and dirty deeds on both sides. slavery was the just the poster child for it all because of the fundamental change in way of life it represented... it would be akin to a push to ban all automotives except for public transportation and emergency personnel in how devastating to the economy (for those states) it would be (and no I'm not comparing cars to slaves, there is no good modern comparison of the economic impact).

    what it really boiled down to is the northern states said hey, we banded together for a common goal, and now we are one, and the southern states said, we don't have this goal in common, we're outta here.

    the requested/highlighted at the most recent CTUG hour, and refrenced in threads in this sub forum specifically, but others brought up recently in regards to the forum are welcome as well.

  10. Several changes in forums were requested... CTUG for this week has been canceled, with the note that the forums are the appropriate place to discuss forum changes.

    Sooooo.... Let's discuss. Are expectations being met? Has consistency improved? do you feel like your concerns are being heard and responded to appropriately? Speak up and be heard =)

  11. I see nothing on either the LSL_Portal page, nore on the Functions category page... nor anything in the recent log

    either you have a virus injecting content into pages, or someone already deleted the attempted graffiti (not sure offhand if deletes show up in the logs)

  12. [view fades in on a partially open door, steam lazily drifting out, in the background the sound of running water]

    Perrie: ah, alone at last.

    [switch view to reflection in a foggy mirror as Perrie slides into the shower, the sound changes to a staccato of pulsed sprays]

    Perrie: mmmm this new shower head was definitely worth every penny... oh!

    [view tracks backwards out of the room and out of the house to increasing noise]

    (script writers note: was this what you had in mind?)
