  1. Is this bait or are you serious? Because if you are serious and are really not doing anything offensive (like portraying a race that's not your own in a stereotypical or harmful way) then I don't see why you'd come here with what I'm reading as anger while trying to justify yourself. But maybe I'm over thinking this because my gut's telling me this is bait to cause drama. Disengaging now.

  2. The last time I logged on I ran into someone with a very nice, well put together avatar. I said hello and complimented their avatar and asked what bento head they used (I was genuinely curious because it looked unique). All-in-all I attempted to strike up a conversation.

Their response? Thanks. They didn't even answer the question! And then proceeded to walk past me. For a social game she was very anti-social. Maybe she was busy, I'll give her that, but she was definitely rude. I hate it when people, in the virtual world or real world, are stuck up.

  3. Really I suppose the answer doesn't matter, I'm just curious. I'm not having fun on Second Life anymore. It was a short lived moment of fun. I think I have waaay more fun on the Forums than in-world. In fact I might stay on the forums but that's neither here nor there. I have one of the new Premium homes and just wanted to know if when I let it go will it just disappear into the ether or will someone who didn't get to get one earlier possibly have a chance to snag it? I hope the latter. If not I'd kind of feel bad for taking one when I know so many really wanted one, only to have me leave a couple weeks later.

  4. Actually, this helped a lot. I know how to unpack and rez. The idea of losing what is put down if I move or whatever is a bit disconcerting, to say the least.

Can you recommend any good inworld stores to visit so I can look at furniture? I've already learned Market Place can be a little deceptive (i.e. I've bought a few avatars that look awful in world no matter what edits I make but look great on MP)

  5. I feel like I might have posted this originally in the wrong thread so I am posting it here too. I'm really tired of my empty home lol

I've got a new Linden home but have absolutely no furniture as of right now to put down in it. I've only recently found out you can hire decorators! So that seems the way to go. I'll need a little help with how to do things (no idea how I allow people to edit my home) but if you are willing to be patient with me then I am willing to pay.

I am looking for soft, feminine designs throughout the house. Not princess-y, so to speak but close to it. Colors I prefer aka color themes I will like to stick close to as possible are soft pink and pale blues and light lavenders and whites. I also like fuzzy and fluffy things but that isn't a requirement, just a bonus.

I play as a vertically challenged human dragon (long story, don't ask lol) so though tall people stuff is fine please keep in mind I'm the size of a child so chairs that are perfect for giantesses who wear foot tall boots and already stand 6'feet won't look all that nice in my home.

Please let me know your price upfront after/if you decide to come to look at my traditional home. That way I can tell you if I can afford it or not and I won't waste anyone's time.

    Thank you for reading.

  6. Not really sure how this works beyond I pay you and you do the work (I'm not sure how I allow you to edit my home) but if you have patience enough to explain things to me then I would love to hire you.

I like colors like pale pink, light blues, lavenders, and whites. Feminine is a good thing. I also like things that are fuzzy and fluffy though that isn't exactly a requirement. If you think you have spare items that might fit my decorating needs then please contact me here or in world and tell me your prices and we'll go from there.

    Thank you very much.

  7. I've got to admit, it's nice to know that the biggest consensus thus far seems to be that it doesn't matter what your avatar looks like. I have to admit that panel kind of got into my head and made me think maybe I won't make any good connections with people because many will shy away from me because I'm not sporting SL Gucci. But I had also made up my mind regardless of what kind of response this thread got that I wouldn't change being what I liked on the chance more people would be willing to chat with me if I blended in more. So, yeah this is kinda putting my mind to ease that most still believe inner substance over outward fashion.

I have never understood "We can't be friends unless you're all mesh and wear all mesh". I understand human beings are visual creatures but considering how often mesh in sl has unnecessarily high triangle counts among other issues it really does betray a sense of "All style and no substance". People are also extremely picky about brands ("He has to be catwa to be seen with me"), as though spending 5000K lindens is an actual reflection of morals.

    Human beings are baffling.

I agree. But I thought to myself, maybe trying to rationalize the panel I saw, that the person wanted an experienced looking avatar because they didn't want to bother teaching new players things? I think it was unlikely in her case but maybe some people view status avatars that way. But maybe I'm just looking for the best in shallow people.

This is one of those ethical type scenarios where there is no wrong or right answer.

Some people are jerks. Others are not.

True, but I'm not searching for the right or wrong answer - (though I do have my very own strong opinion on the matter) as I really do think if you take emotions out of the equation the 'right-wrong' answer doesn't exist in this case.  Sorry if my title made it sound that way. I'm more or less interested in different people's thoughts on the matter.

you might want to look again at wearing a facelight

the secret to good face lights is making them really subtle. To get the shadow wash out effect that you are wanting

not sure if you know how to make your own, so I just put here how I go about it

    1) rez a prim. Name it "facelight". Take it back into inventory. Then attach it to your chin.
    2) while wearing it then Edit it and move the prim out a bit in front of your face, then:
    3) Object panel: set all X,Y,Z size to 0.01
    4) Features panel:
    - tick Light. (you will light up like a xmas tree to begin with)
    - set Intensity to 0.5, Radius to 0.5, Falloff to 0.5. Leave FOV, Focus, Ambiance at 0.0
    - you are now in the area of where you want to be in terms of light. So that nobody will hardly even know that you are wearing a facelight. Just that you look gorgeous :)
    - then starting playing with the values. Tiny bit up or down depending on what effect you exactly want
    - other thing is to play with moving the facelight prim, up, down, closer or further away from your face
    - the other other thing is to subtley color tint the light to better match your skin/makeup. Next to the Light tick is the Color button
    5) When all done, then Texture panel:
    - set the prim to a Transparent texture which is in Inventory\Library, or Blank texture and set Transparency to 100

    6) detach the facelight so that the changes you made will stick, then re-attach and you good

when you have different avatars then can make a facelight specific tailored for each. And/or for different outfits/makeups

a caveat:  we can use the Point light option on the Features panel to do this also. The downside is that Point lights only work as point lights when ALM is turned on. When not they act like normal lights. So I prefer to make mine as normal lights so that the light effect is consistent across all graphics settings

Thanks! I learned something new today. I had no idea how to make a facelight so this might come in handy as the previous one I bought looked awful and I deleted it.

If there's one thing about me everyone should know, it's how obsessed I am with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I've been looking for the outfit / uniform worn by Captain Marvel in the movie, but to no avail. Does anyone know any store or creator who has it? Or if Pepper Potts 'Rescue' suit, the Wasp's suit, or any of the MCU girls' outfits are available? Preferably from canon, rather than overly sexualized.

I would sell my kidney for any of that.

    Thank you!

This probably isn't what you are looking for but if you really want one of any Carol Danvers iteration then there is this very comic-book-like one here. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Captain-Marvel/16811762

I think it is one of the canon comic book outfits, actually. I haven't seen one like from the live-action movie yet but I'm sure there will be one eventually. Might have to get creative with your search terms though because I've found some real gems of intellectual property buried underneath similar but not quite the same name. For instance, I once found a Tokyo Ghoul item under Chinese Zombie. That really made me laugh.

  12. Or maybe the better question is should the way your avatar look affect forming bonds?

Rather we like to admit it or not I think it is human to judge and sometimes that the first impression is all you'll ever get. We do it in rl so I'm sure many of us do it in sl too. But I suppose the main gist of my question is does how another's avatar look determine if you will befriend them. I'm not talking extreme cases i.e. people with trolly avatars but let's say you have a very nice, very beautiful bento/maitreya human avatar would you be open to conversing and possibly becoming friends with someone who is dressed as a furry, an animal, a toon, an anime character or a very basic newbie avatar?

I never really gave this much thought until the other day when I came across some friendship panels in which someone wrote, in so many words, that they take pride in their avatar and only wanted possible friends who were up on the latest fashion and didn't look like they just spawned in-world for the first time.

Though I can see the advantages of having experienced and aesthetically pleasing avatar as friends I mostly think it's very secondary to the content of the person's character behind the avatar. You can have the most drop-dead gorgeous, exclusive item having avatar ever and be a raging jerk underneath all those pixels. But then again maybe I'm taking this stance because I would undoubtedly be the ugly avatar friend with my very specific anime-inspired avatars.

    Your thoughts?

(Please forgive any typos that might be in my text.)

One quick and easy thing to try is Ctrl Shift Y
This will change your windlight settings to Midday.   That will help chase the shadows away.

Unfortunately anything you do will affect your view only, tho.  Everyone else will see shadows or lighting depending on their settings.  Even face lights will not show up for anyone who has "render attached lighting" turned off.

Thank you. I'm a bit sad it will only affect my viewer but its better than nothing I guess

Turning off Advanced Lighting Model (ALM) in graphics preferences should mostly do it, I think. Alternately, you can wear point lights as invisible attachments to fade out shadows by casting direct light over your body.

Thank you so much. I turned off ALM and for at least one avatar (that I've tested so far) it made a huge difference.

  15. OH! And there will be the new home options instead of the standard four that are present right now, is that right?

Thanks so much! That's very convenient. Now I get why people kept saying they were repeatedly pressing refresh!

    Wait....and wait some more.

The new releases were snatched up in hours after they were released.  A new lot of houseboats is coming soon - any hour now I guess.

they too will go fast, best just keep refreshing - when you get lucky they will be available on the page :)

What page? Sorry for asking but I'm still figuring this out and only know what I've read so far, and really everyone is so excited that no one's helping a newb out too much like myself to understand things.
