What if you hit LL ground, or a sim border, or nothing at all (because of limited ray length)? There's nothing for particles to target there.

Maybe your target is in a large mesh room, and the particles from your weapon fly toward the center of that room instead of the wall behind your target (because particles can only move toward the center of objects).

Speaking of your weapon, if that's the source of your particle effect, the trail will move and wiggle around as your avatar moves around, which just doesn't look as good as a trail that stays on the trajectory of the ray.

Sure, I mean, two things there. That's something that could be changed for one. Set particle location to the resulting area of a castray but even if not, that's not something I'd consider a deal breaker in combat. You don't get to see bullets flying by IRL, you do see them hit walls and such but that isn't a deal breaker. You could play the gun firing audio loudly, then have you're script scan the area for avatars within a certain range, or "near miss" range of the pathway and used llTriggerSoundLimited and play a zing sound around them personally so they hear it whiz by. Ultimately, a NoRez Combat meter not only can be done, it has been done with current systems, but creating a system off LL damage would be ideal Especially if you integrate the ability to opt into turning on damage for yourself anywhere. As I mentioned in my previous post.

While no-rez style combat can work and be fun (I really like a sword-fighting system called CornerStone from 8+ years ago), the problem with long-range combat is the lack of feedback between players. How do you know someone is shooting at you from 100 meters away? Raycast weapons need to create some kind of visual effect on every attack, like a particle-trail (which requires rezzing), regardless of hit or miss.

Making particle trails does not require rezzing. Rather than rezzing a prim and targeting that prim, have the particles come from the weapon barrel node and target the avatar or object the raycast is "hitting." I'm pretty sure that would work, would it not?

Applying damage via llDamage is concerning though because it doesn't seem very secure at the moment, at least with sending a prim out to someone to bonk them with damage doing anything beyond firing said prim from a gun requires an entry level of know how on communicating target key to damaging prim, i'd be concerned that making it as simple as rezzing a box, and doing while(0) { llDamage(person i'm mad at, 100, 0) } could lead to bad actors ruining the fun even more so than they already do. While yes, a sim admin can look at the combat log, the ease of griefing somebody with this may outweigh the benefits to simplifying damage passing.

I agree with the idea that llDamage could be abused. perhaps it were tied to a single instance per event in the script, and maybe even tied to RayCast. I just see the opportunity for making a simple no rez combat system with this, which could open up all sorts of places for combat that would be fun. No rez would mean less lag, as well, and would minimize the rez queue issues we tend to have. Just my simple minded thoughts on the topic. I do like the concept as posted, for my desires, most of this would work well. But, yes, limiting llDamage from just being able to rez a box and scripting death for someone into it is a good idea.

    -EDIT-

I also think it would be nice to be able to override the no damage, or "Safe" selection in a parcel for you personally. So you could turn on damage for yourself in a non damage area. So you could feasibly opt-in to combat experiences in places that maybe you don't typically have combat, without making EVERYONE there take part.

Also maybe remove the llDamage function if you do not have your damage on, so you can't send damage if you can't receive damage.

Another thing is you could tie that option to profiles or at least allow scripts to detect if you're damage enabled, so someone could have a HUD that detects potential combatants on sims. Could add a little cloak and dagger to the combat world, too.

...First, there is a rule that there should be no commercial activity. I'm for the Lindens not looking for loopholes to their own law, and taking the technical fact that this game's individual players do not have cash transactions on Bellissaria soil  to let it in, because it does mean more traffic and lag. Same principle applies to pods. More traffic and more lag.

So, from what I gather, you misunderstand. You realize that no one is actually asking to let people sell or put up giant signs for markets on their homes. Not from the GTFO! group anyway. A "hub" just means a place that your HUD recognizes as a pickup or drop off. There would not be any commercial activity what-so-ever. Bringing up the PODs is not helping you. You realize Patch is /FOR/ the pods, as are most of us mainlanders. And finally, you're "More traffic and More lag" comment betrays the problem you have at it's core. Your complaint isn't truly about any commercial or rule breaking you claim to think might be happening, it's because you're essentially not wanting people to use the beautiful streets of Bellisseria except you. But the rest of us? Vastly more residents enjoy and anticipate more community enjoyment of the area. I'm an old man, and even I'M not screaming for these people to Get off my lawn!

GTFO is a harmless and enjoyable game.

@BlackBlade Smit  Could you file a bug about that at https://jira.secondlife.com/secure/CreateIssue!default.jspa ?

Please reproduce the login failure and then before relaunching the viewer, zip up your viewer logs folder and attach it to the jira issue using More Actions -> Attach files.  This page tells you where to find the logs folder: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-report-a-bug/ta-p/733545#Section_.3

@Dan Linden Sorry it took so long! Life's been a little nuts lol. I bug reported it and it's BUG-228549 I did also state you asked me to do so in the report so you could know it was the right one. It's still doing it with the official release.

That sounds as though you need to whitelist the viewer with the firewall on your system; that message usually means that UDP packets between the viewer and the simulator are not getting through.

Thank you, Oz. I just whitelisted ALL of the .exe files in the secondlife folder and it's still happening. It logs me in, even receives a group message or whatever, then just logs me out with the "darn" message. It's a little slow connecting and even drags on when loading. I went to a sim that seems to be just water called kara to try logging in, too, same thing. It's super bumming me out lol. It has done this in every version of this particular beta I've ever tried to download. Not sure why. I use the default SL view no problem, also firestorm works no problemo. It's only the EEP viewers, and it's heartbreaking lmao

  7. So, I can't for the life of me get the EEP viewer to work. I got the latest from the "alternative viewers" section and every time it logs me in, At most it starts to load my friendslist (showing me who's online, etc.) then boom! "Darn, you have been logged out of SecondLife." message appears. I'm so jealous of you who get to play with this. I've been following  and excited since the concept was revealed, as I love making my own windlights and often people ask me for them. I have having to go through the hub bub iof file sending and walking them through installation, etc. This will be SO much easier, if it doesn't crash me every time I log in, that is. I don't believe I'm using that video card it says they know crashes on startup, I've got an invidia RTX 2060 for crying out loud! It is MORE than powerful enough for this. I'll just be here pouting and lusting after your pictures. Please post more pics for those of us who can't play with it. *bats eyelashes*

  8. Ok. Listen. Anti-Banline people. PLEASE! Let us keep this civil. I know both sides have said things that were too much, but frankly, I can only speak to my group.
Having said that. I think if a set of sims were off away from the rest that were considered "Secured" sims, then that way when you apply for your Linden home, you can select "Traditional" or "Traditional Secured." Or "Houseboat." Or "Houseboat Secured." And the secured ones are all clumped together to be together, so that both sides ultimately could get what they want.  Especially if these are not on the main paths of travel.

    Excellent improvements. Thanks.

I wonder if the home contents pack could include a controlled lighting item(s)... maybe toggled off/soft/bright via the home control panel?

I make some scripts if you like, hit me up one day I'll toss them to you. I use some in a CHI ceiling fan and it's awesome!

My objecting to pilots buzzing rooftops is not anti-community. I love how friendly neighbors are and the overall out and about way people are acting. I'm talking about simple manners. Buzz rooftops in that other world and a pilot will get their license pulled.

I would agree. Part of this is the necessity of teaching travelers a standard code of operation. That's all part of the "working together" aspect. I've never been /for/ people's privacy being taken completely. I am just FOR people working together for the betterment of the community. Travelers and homeowners alike. It's a WE thing. Not an Us VS. Them thing. Ya know?

Well since I see it's customary here...  Your source please?

I never bothered with banlines or 0-second orbs on my land.  Well, till now.  Is that reactionary, immature, irrational, or maybe petty?  Probably.  So what.

I already stated my source. ("I've read all the comments on this, and other threads.")  Also, it's an observation, not a scientific study. Besides, you didn't share a source, nor did you address it when you were asked, even to admit you have none as I have. My source is entirely observation. Fact is, this is what's been done. Don't like it? Don't get one of the homes. That's absolutely your choice. You can get one of the older homes, even. Ultimately, this is the choice made by the company who DOES have the sources. They DO have the records of people. And, I mean, this entire thread minus you is for this change, and the new homes are going FAST, so... I mean... I don't see the droves of premium users who demand ban lines or 0 second orbs. *shrugs* Either way, I'm glad it's gone this way and frankly hope the rest of mainland does, too. Might even revive it. Because, mainland was dead with just ban lines and ad farms every where until things started being done to let it be functional again. Ban lines and 0 second security orbs all but kill travel. Travel is the life blood of the mainland.

You know. I've read all the comments on this, and other threads. Interesting thing here: Almost all of them are anti-ban line and anti- 0 second orbs.  honestly, it's YOU who are the minority. /MOST/ Mainland users dislike ban lines and 0 second orbs.

You bring up an interesting topic. I know I've seen some folks upset because they cannot afford premium. However, they will work 3 jobs in Sl to be able to afford the same amount of Linden equivalent to pay rent and buy clothes. Could there be a way for LL to start allowing folks to pay premium with Linden Dollars? I know you can cash out, and keep the USD in your account to be used for tier/premium but could there be a way to just pay straight with Linden dollars and not have to cash out? It might open up more people that otherwise might not be able to afford to live in premium housing.

I agree. That could be efficient for those with full sims and rentals, too.

  15. Bravo! I don't mind this sort of compromise. It's really the ban lines and 0 second security orbs that ruins mainland travel. This is a good way to keep your land safe and also community friendly. I do hope that eventually, once we've hammered out the details here, this sort of change can be rolled out mainland-wide.

It refers to the yellow semi-translucent lines that show up around your parcel when you either bring up the "About Land" window or you select something for editing.  So try doing one of those two things with that box checked.

Oh, ok. See, i have mine set to show parcel lines all the time, lol. I always forget others get those with about land. That stinks. Wish there was a setting to keep them up. The moment I select a prim or something, it vanishes. Thank you, though! You're awesome!

  17. 3 hours ago, LittleMe Jewell said:

Not arguing that the orb setting was ridiculous.  However, to the quoted part - if you use Firestorm, on the 'Firestorm / Build 2' tab, you can get it to show you the boundaries of your parcel even at 2000 meters (all the way to 4096, actually):

I don't understand, then, because I turned mine on, then this was taken. I don't see the lines,. The area with the dark prims is a crude mapping I've done of the road parcel through our land (since it auto returns) and I don't see any kind of marking here. I do see it on the ground, and have for quite some time. That setting seemed to do absolutely nothing, unless I'm doing it wrong? Pic for understanding sake:

Not much, I'm guessing.  I can't imagine many people who are willing to keep paying land fees, Premium membership, rent, whatever, for a year or more without logging in.  Not saying that it doesn't happen, but there can;t be a lot of people like that.

It happens a LOT more than you'd think. Whenever I find planes and other craft stuck on ban lines I tend to message both the craft owner and the land owner letting them both know the craft is there (usually loudly at full throttle) and once I've done that, if in a few days it isn't retrieved and I notice, I'll go to investigate if they'd been online and ignored it, or if they've just not been online. Turns out, quite often, they're a year or more, or close to a year, since log in. I saw one that wasn't online for like 2-4 years. In fact the sim to our direct south is owned by a group, created and owned by the group owner, and when we messaged him about possibly developing on it (the entire sim is left empty minus some aircraft stuck on the sim edges) he said "Oh, do I still own that?" He's been online but didn't even notice he owned an entire sim. He still hasn't addressed it, either. Which goes to show, a lot of folks really do just pay for land meaninglessly.

    Linden Lab does.

That's 100% accurate. And people have a right to petition LL to take measures to prevent the issue from continuing by restricting certain "security" options that have been shown to be overkill as well as abused in many situations in order to purposefully hinder access to things like airports. Yes, that happens. People buy land right next to an airport JUST because said airport pissed them off and they had a few extra m2 to fill in their tier level, so they get the land and erect ban lines with the sole purpose of interrupting air traffic to and from the airport. There are many other scenarios where this is a serious issue.

  20. You know, in real life, they call it an Easement, and I'm more than willing that LL make a requirement for me to not be allowed certain security option on certain portions of land. And Honestly security orbs in the sky above the access line limit, should not be allowed, IMO . I think it's more than reasonable to ask that any "ban lines" be set a certain distance from the roads, waterways. Because frankly, they are /not/ all set up with "plenty of room."

What if your land was life enabled and you used an anti-aircraft gun to shoot at the planes flying over?

I once told my demon friend that he should enroll his life-enabled land in that gold hunt game they used to have.

Then we could sit at the top of his castle and snipe at people as they walked toward the gold hoard.

He said no because he was afraid it might be considered griefing.

LOL the combatant in me relishes the challenge. LOL But I think there could be an argument to be make there for /inviting/ people in just to shoot them without even letting them know the danger of being shot home is there.  For me, tping in just to get tp'd home before it loads almost always crashes me.

Just want to say thank you BlackBlade for contacting me inworld and inviting me to tour your mainland sim.

I thought you did an excellent job, combining natural areas with your futuristic city.

I wish more people could have such a coherent vision and bring it to fruition.

No problem! Any time. I'd extend the same invitation to others, honestly. We get on without Security orbs or ban lines. A 4 hour auto return so people have plenty of time to enjoy the area around and within us. :) I've have the motorcycles lodged full rev in my scenery before, but I usually hear it immediately when I log in and deal with it. NBD. I'd even say it's satisfying. I also tend to look at surrounding abandoned land and owned (but basically abandoned lol) land and contact other people who've lost various noisy objects to let them know it's there. In other words, I put in a little effort to try and be a good neighbor. Because I think we can be better in SL. RL is full of "I can so I will" types, why not try and be better here, is my stance. So I think that, as has been done in the past with access lines, they should do something to nerf security orbs usage.

Which only shows what a blatant problem this is. Rather than shelling up and demanding your can tell pilots and such "stuff it, my land" we could actually try and come to some level of agreement or solution.

The bottom line is what Linden Lab says.  The TOS gives landowners the right to deny or allow access to their own land, as long as they don't do something that violates the TOS (like shooting down aircraft).  It's pretty black and white.  If you own the land, you make the rules.  You don't have to publish them anywhere, or apply them consistently, or explain them. I don't like it all the time either, because I think it's nasty to badger people who are flying 1000m above your land.  The TOS does favor the landowner, though.

Except, that it doesn't give "landowners the right to deny or allow access to their own land, as long as they don't do something that violates the TOS (like shooting down aircraft)." as is so worded by Female Winslet here:

15 minutes ago, Female Winslet said:

Almost. The TOS (section 3.4) also says "You agree that Linden Lab has the right to manage, regulate, control, modify and/or eliminate such Virtual Land as it sees fit and that Linden Lab shall have no liability to you based on its exercise of such right." A couple of posts earlier, I gave you some of those rules that they make. Specifically, this one:

    Script Use

You can use scripted objects to enhance your land ownership tools. Generally, such scripts should:

    • Provide adequate warning to the undesired Resident.
    • Only work within the property lines (this includes projectiles that cannot operate beyond the parcel boundaries).
    • Not be excessive in the removal of the unwanted Resident. Pushing an avatar off the property or teleporting them home is generally acceptable; intentionally applying a script to disrupt someone's Second Life connection or online status is not allowed.

Scripts or no scripts, you cannot use land ownership as a way to unfairly restrict another Second Life Resident's personal freedoms.

So that is a written restriction.

Can you explain how a zero warning script complies with this rule when the first bullet point says such scripts should "[p]rovide adequate warning to the undesired Resident?" No warning at all would seem to violate that restriction.
