Why did this need THREE threads?

Proper forum etiquette is to NOT post the same thing in multiple places.

    Duplicate thread here:

    and here:

    No worries,

if you can show me how to delete the other two,

    I'll do that. Thanks :)

Edit: I just didn't know which section this issue would really apply to, so I posted it in two other sections. However, if there is a way to actually delete these threads. I'd be happy to do that too.

  2. Hi All,
I'd like to share an issue I have been having - which may have been for a long time but never noticed until recently - I have already contacted support regarding this and have yielded no answers as all the suggestions the support specialist has suggested do not work.

So I am posting this on the forums to see if someone has suggestions or has experienced a similar issue. I may share this on a few of the other sections here on the forums as I am unsure where to post this.

I have been a premium member for almost two years. And I have always had a first and last name because my account was created before last names were switched to Resident. I had not contemplated a name change until recently as I now want my first name in-world avatar's name to match my SL Facebook name.

My avatar's first name in world is actually the word "No" ( please don't ask, I was young and dumb when I first created my account, hehe ). Sometimes people have trouble finding my avatar name in search inworld, and it gets confusing, so I figured I would toy with the idea of changing that first name.

Anyway, each time I click on the "Change Name" tab in the drop-down menu, as shown below:

    image.png.fbca873949f1912757d4451abba4da5a.png

I receive the error page shown below. I have displayed the url and the actual page that shows up. As you can see in the top right corner is says "Login", However, I am already logged into the home page/dashboard. Even when I click that "Login" button, I get popped back to the home page/ dashboard and it automatically appears as if I am logged in again to the dash board. The support specialist that was helping me suggested I log out and log back in and try again - I have done that - but, I am still getting this server error page.

    Has anyone experienced this?

How have you been able to resolve this issue?

Does the change name feature only work for some premium users and not all?

My current membership is the Premium - Annual Membership.

Thank you for your help and any suggestions.

  6. WOW Thank you for the responses!

Sometimes I upload PNG anyway, depending on the object it will be applied to, jpg is no friend of detail and tga has it's moments. I figured the reason why this happens is because, sometimes the texture I am working on has many layers, so when I save from that psd file and save as png, it comes out like the above in SL, but if I "copy merge" and paste in a new window on top of a white/or black background I can get away with uploading png.

@ChinRey thank you for sharing the way to do it in gimp! I hope someone finds that helpful in the future ❤️

Don't upload textures as PNG unless you want them to have transparency.

In general don't use PNG really, save as TGA 24bit for opaque textures, 32 bit for transparent textures.

Thank you, aw that is what I have been using as a "fix" or jpg but, it ruins the quality of the texture.

  8. Hello everyone,

I usually have a fix for this, and my "fix" is probably not the conventionally way. I was wondering if anyone can explain to a blender newbie why my mesh models always appear transparent when I apply a png texture to it? I always recalculate normals and when I save the bake, it is normally saved as "png". Please help, thank you in advance

I think the question is who should be teaching.

Personally I feel I've done more than my fair share of that job, here on the forums, in-world and, recently, through my blog. It is very rewarding when I see people really apreciate what I try to do but it is very time consuming and for the most part what I get in return is frustration, complaints and occasionally downright harassment. It has cost me quite a lot of money too because all the time I've spent advicing others means I haven't been able to give enough attention to my own little SL stores or my own building.

I only speak for myself here of course but I'm quite sure you can find many others who will say similar things.

I get what you're saying and that's the general attitude around SL. Most designers or content creators do not have the time or energy to teach. My point is, if we're going to complain about how things look in world ( as experts ) do so with the intent to mentor or "teach". And some point it starts to just looks like bullying if you're nitpicking at newbies  as a master of the craft.

I hope my point is clear and not being misunderstood but, if it is, no offense taken, we can agree to disagree.

  10. Who is teaching the "basics" to beginners?

Let's not pretending the learning curve for blender is pretty high. It took me well over 6 months to learn how to create some basic things, from watching tutorials and trying things out myself, there aren't too many other creators within the SL community willing to "teach". And newbies like me and others are left to figure it out ourselves, of course the outcome of that will be creating whatever we want however we want.

I have been more mindful about polycounts but, my process has not been perfect and while I am already my worse critique it just sucks that there is no one in world that I can go to, to say; hey can you help me out with such and such... I have to figure out the answers myself. And everyone just acts like you're out to steal knowledge, thats why I don't bother and just do my own thing.

Either you guys complain about new mesh creators or you talk to us and tell us what the right way to do stuff is...

Yeah as Beq said, your problem is that you are using Ngons. While it's not necessarily bad, it means that you are leaving the triangulation of the ngon completely up to blender.

Which it will do in the simplest and most efficient way possible (as in probably poorly). Try to cut everything to either 3 or 4 sided polygons to ensure a predictable result.

Also check out my normal editing tutorial if you want to get "rounded" edges for very little polygon count.

    Hi Kyrah!

Thank you for the response. Where can I find the tutorial you mentioned?

And yes, I ending up triangulating it in blender before uploading it to SL because, as you said, if I didn't control the way it was done blender would mess the entire thing up, even after using the insert tool and creating more vertices. I am happy with the end result but, I would definitely improve on a number of things as I go on.. It was a nice project. Thank you all for the responses ❤️

That error typically occurs when the exporter (or even the viewer importer) tries to triangulate a non-planar concave N-Gon and gets its knickers in a twist.  The quickest way to test this is often to triangulate the mesh using blender just before exporting (ctrl-t IIRC). The problem you are having appears to be with the heart surface itself, the triangulation in the Avastar exporter is not dealing correctly with the V in that large N-gon surface. My slight reservation in proclaiming that for sure is that the stretch appears to be inset, does the heart have an interior surface too? The Avastar exporter does this, the algorithm it uses when triangulating is different to the one used in the default exporter (and in Blender internally) hence the different results. @Gaia Clary will undoubtedly be able to explain this. The solution is to take control of the triangulation yourself, at the very least for the problme N-gon.

Assuming I am correct, you need only fix the heart and give the exporter some hints by bisecting it vertically to remove the concave (V) area, splitting theheart in two (see my poor sketch). Another option is to highlight the N-gon and triangulate just that part (ctrl-t), leaving the exporter to do the rest later. Keep in mind that for rigging it will need to be have more vertices distributed across the falt area in order for it to deform properly.

You certainly do not need more geometry in the V itself, keep it as clean as possible only add the vertices where you need them.

Thank you so much! I literally just figured out a solution. Hopefully this carries on all the way into the rigging process *fingers crossed* because, now that you've mentioned it, that may have been why it looked weird when I uploaded it after the last rig but, I thought that was because of the geometry. I wanted to split the heart in two as you suggested ( which I did try ) but, I got a little nervous that it would affect re-baking later on so I ended up using the insert tool which seems to fix the profile all together! HAHA! Thank you for your response!!! :)❤️

P.s! I had to look at how the mesh uploader triangulated it by doing CrtL + Shift + R to realize what I was truly doing wrong, so I triangulated it in blender and then subdivided and wouldn't you know it fixed it too but, then I had a ton of vertices so, I had to scratch that solution hehe. #NewbieBlenderDiaries hahaha

  13. Hello Everyone,

I really wanted to cut down on the number of vertices this heart would have and after doing so, it won’t upload right on SL when I export it with avastar. However, when I use the regular exporter, it seems to work fine which is not necessarily of any advantage to me because, I plan on rigging it and I would need to export it using the avastar option once that is done ( I tested that using the previous model before making additional adjustments to it ). How can I fix it? Should I add additional vertices to the “V” area of the heart? Also, I baked some test textures and they won’t apply correctly on account of this issue.

    Please help.

Keep in mind when you work that your shapes should be quadrilaterals (four sides but not necessarily even sides) which then get turned into triangles when the model is uploaded. You don't normally need to triangulate but you do need to think about building your model so that it is made up of those shapes.

This would be a more typical way an L shaped could be made.  Just another example.  This one has more vertices of course; I recognize that.

Thank you!! That brings to mind another puzzle I have been absentmindedly tackling in blender. How do I add edges to faces within a model that do not have vertices? When I use the CRTL + R method, nothing happens to the face of the object but, other subdivided parts are affected. I have resorted to using the knife tool which doesn't seem to be the best possible option in some instances since I cannot subdivide that edge anyway.

I hope my description of this makes sense, thank you for any advice offered, I really appreciate it!

I'm not sure if I understand you right but it may sound like you are trying to upload a model with concave polys.

That is, if it looks something like this:

    5b7158ef8703d_Skjermbilde(1331).png.ed8a22c753cbeea2541cf628c4302661.png

and you have the triangulate button in the export options unchecked:

    5b71591ff3ed3_Skjermbilde(1333).png.46c59fc1f1afae2cf5655b1bef987c4b.png

You will get  problems not unlike what you describe.

The best solution is to split the concave poly into convex quads. For an L shape single edge across is enough:

    5b7159bca1c7c_Skjermbilde(1332).png.22855f44d80b17aa69d01eea97ee859d.png

The second best option is to check the triangulate button.

Yes! Exactly that, I'll try it shortly and see if that makes a difference. I uploaded the model to test it and was surprised that the shape took a different form. What you've described looks like it would work perfectly. Also, I didn't think to triangulate at export, I am thinking if I wanted to take it into another program to paint that would come in handy as well, thanks a ton ChinRey!

  16. Hi everyone,

I don't have pictures of my model atm but, I can provide close ups of the issue if my explanation isn't clear. I am trying to upload a mesh object that is shaped like the letter "L" from blender but, for some reason, when I get the model into SL, it doesn't look like an L any more but, distorted to a point where it appears some edges and vertices seem to be missing. Is there a way to fix this? Do I need more faces and edges on my model? I know this may be hard to determine since I don't have pictures of the model right now but, I hope someone is familiar with this problem.

    Thank you for your time!!

You are very welcome  --- and even when you get REALLY experienced the texture just doesn't end up looking exactly like the render LOL. Just the way it is. Sometimes -- especially with metals -- it comes close. But eventually you will understand what to expect when you upload and get closer and closer to what you want.

Have a great journey!   And try to keep in mind that MANY Blender tutorials have great information but the mesh is WAY TOO DENSE for Second Life and similar platforms. So try to keep things with as few vertices as you can and still have it look good.

So when the tutorial says "we'll set the sub-surf modifier to four" -- you try 1 *wink*

Yes! sadly I am learning that multiplying subsurfaces is a no-go zone for secondlife but, that’s okay, there are so many other ways around it. Your videos were very good for a beginner like me, especially with unwrapping and texturing!. I was nervous once the node section popped up but, you made it seem like a breeze, so that’s awesome! I kid you not, I have watched those videos a few times and have saved them to my favorites! New subscriber here, cannot wait to see and learn more!

    Thank you!

Yes of course you can save a render made in Cycles :D.  The problem is like many to most Blender tutorials, this one (I watched it long ago) was about designing a ring to be used JUST as a RENDER and not baked (so you get a pretty photo of a ring and you have that).

I suggest saving this as it is (there are a few major problem for getting that wring into world) and backtrack to learn the basics.

Theses tutorials were designed JUST for SL and OS and cover all the steps.

    Wow Hi!

I am watching your video right this very moment!! haha! I later found it while searching through youtube and it helped immensely! Thank you so much for them! Although the texture did not end up like the initial render, it's a huge step forward from where I started when I began. Thank you and thank you again!!!

  19. Hi everyone,

I am very new to blender and as I make my way through learning the interfaces by watching and following various tutorials on youtube, I have had so much fun with playing around with the settings. There is so much more to learn but, one thing I have been stuck on for the last couple of hours is baking. I have watched a few tutorials so far and searched through the forums but, I cannot seem to find anything that correlates with my blender. I either can’t find the buttons described in the tutorial or the version I am using seems updated. I would really like to know how to bake and export this texture from the cycles render.

Sorry, If my technical terms are off. I am still learning a lot. But, is it possible to save the image texture applied in the cycles render?

Here is the tutorial I followed

    https://youtu.be/zqhi8q4EGZk

My final render looks a little different after doodooling with various features as a result of frustration and curiosity. However, I like how it looks at the moment.
