We've had a recent spate of people coming into the forums with ideas of exactly how LL could 'fix' Second Life. Things like -

    - and so forth. (The clue is in the fact that the starter avatars are just good enough to begin with, but pretty soon new users will want to customise their avatar yet further and more uniquely, and will thus start shopping and contributing to the inworld economy.)

We've also recently seen people coming in, assuming there is easy money to be made here, because they've thought of The Only Way To Do It. I'm not suggesting that you're such a person, but please forgive us if we're a little... jaded on such matters.

Second Life is fourteen years old, is constantly moving forward (Animesh is on its way, for example), and it is what it is. It doesn't need 'fixing'. In many cases, where a 'fix' is seen by those who are coming in freshly to the platform, it simply cannot be implemented because SL is based on fourteen year-old code that's been patched and darned so much it's like Trigger's Broom. ;)

The starting characters are great and enough, but really believe that starting ground could definitely use some work.
I think people looking for millions from virtual reality might be out of touch, i know most are jumping on mobile game band-wagon right now.
I understand the argument of old code, but disallowing auto lod creation, setting poly guide lines or improving the auto triangulator would drastically increase the feel of the world.
I work in game development, its hard for me not see things which could be improved, professional curse you could say so

The reason i want to get back into sl is quite funny tbh,
i was buying chocolate for my wifes birthday and the cashier i was talking to had open laptop looking forward at me,
corner of my eye noticed familiar looks and when i looked in focus i saw second life.
After asking for how long she was playing she got extremely hyped and almost started crying lol, she could not believe someone recognized what she was doing
and the platform she was playing, we had a good laugh, talked for almost half an hour, very positive experience.
So here i am, and as a game dev natural thing to ask for me is what i could create and talking what could be improved hehe

you start with a question about uploads and now want a total explanation about the economics on buying and selling... you better start living in Sl and see how it develops for you. We seen many come with big sales plans... and see them go even faster after huge disapointments.

You talk about pennies here for most items.. not dollars. The years of quick money are very long ago.

Ive been a member for some time couple years ago, i have some understanding in how things work,
but my understanding might be outdated that is why im asking all these questions, Its not about big sales or business plans.
If you dont want to answer on some of my questions is totally fine, but turnings my arguments into 'The years of quick money are very long ago.' which implies for
that im asking these questions to earn easy money is ridicules.

this is low?... multiply these numbers with eachother and you get a impression of the possible variatons that you can make with all these.....

and not all what is for sale is to find at MP.  Some stores, also A brands dont have a MP store but inworld.

don't compare apples and pears... that isn't just by marketplace, but also landsales, rentals, services ...

Im not trying to stir a pot here, i think these kind of questions are valid. You are right, not everything is on marketplace.

Most shops are on the Marketplace. Not all and their absence I am sure is purposeful in the cases of big name mesh body designers for example :D.  But I read an official quote the other day about the number of items on the Marketplace and IF I remember correctly (I think it was Dakota that mentioned) it was somewhere around 5 Billion (with a B) items.

There are currently 5.4 million active listings on the Marketplace.  - Dakota Linden

The thread was about how new items ended up far down in the listings because of the way the Marketplace weights search.  I was very surprised at the number of items on the Marketplace. Many of those of course are gacha resales and many are demos; still a big number for me.

It IS difficult to move up in the listings so that people can then FIND your item and then hopefully buy :D.

And that article was from two years ago. Concurrency has gone down steadily since then. I am making about the same or a bit more than I did two years ago, but I am also producing a lot more. So it is harder than it was then (or even long before then) to make big bucks in SL. Folks still do it. I am not one of them LOL,

Concurrency and MAU has gone down indeed in the past years, the main reason in my opinion is probably large amounts of content created by users who have to idea what optimizations are. At the end engine has to stream large amounts of data, in which every object is pretty much one draw call with large poly count (Most people i see playing are with laptops, so they cant handle it on good graphics). LODs should solve the problem, but from what ive seen people usually create just the high poly single version and rest of the lods look really bad (very noticeable in cities). The starting main land in sl is also EXTREMELY awful in my opinion, it should the best sl can offer, but new users get badly uv unwrapped weird island instead. SL could get much more user traffic by investing couple thousand dollars in very good starting assets, but they seem to be focused on starting characters (with angel wings), just my 2 cents on this topic.
But im very passionate about sl in overall, ill give it a try after couple years of pause hehe.

Just some input on these other two things apparently (I read through quickly) not answered. And yes, the CREATION forums is where the OP wants to be for sure :D.

You CAN bake shadows onto a model but you CANNOT keep folks for using shadows within the viewer. So the best method for many things is to add subtle AMBIENT shadows to your items that will not interfere with the real world shadows. The other option would be to create a complete scene with everything you want in it (as I understand it this is more likely a SANSAR method than an SL method where folks here buy from all sorts of creators and appreciate things "going together" visually).

The most popular things to buy are women's clothing and accessories. There is however plenty of competition there.  It sounds like you make more home and garden things. They don't sell as well as clothing in most cases since a lot of SL folks don't own land but still buy clothes and such.

The BETA GRID is your friend. As well as the CREATION FORUMS.

    Welcome.

Appreciate the input, women's clothing and accessories makes sense.
Is the second life market main place where people sell their stuff? Because i checked the market and item count is quite low to be honest.
Not sure how it goes together with statistical claims like this.

The landbusiness is indeed one of the sources of income for LL.

Just for information... you can't just import assets to SL, you need to be the legal owner/creator of the design or have a license to do so.

Yes, of course, i plan to release content which is completely made by me. It's business model is understandable, each of user room is pretty much a public node, they have to handle bandwidth traffic which is processed by their server code, they have to pay for that and devs.

There is beta grid that can be used for testing stuff. You don't need to have land in the main grid to use it.

I will try out the beta rooms, sounds like the option i can use for now.

I appreciate all your time and patience explaining and providing me with useful links, thank you very much and have a nice weekend!
    Cheers

if you mean really personal and nobody else owning  .... thats not possible.

All sl land is owned by Linden Lab, and you rent it directly frome them by the buying of mainland and pay montly tiers, or whole estate (sim) , or you rent from another resident, who again pays for it to LL.

For buying mainland you have to be premium member. For renting by another resident you don't have to be premium

But most important... there is no land, or space available that doens't have fees, LL will take the money themself from your CC or paypal/skrill, when you rent from another resident you'll have to take care for the payments youself, or their automated systems.

Keep in mind when you rent from others, there is no support or protection against bad landlords.

Okay, so in that case im interested in buying land directly from LL, i have to be premium member. I didnt quite get what you mean by 'whole estate (sim)', one option is to rent - monthly payment okay, is there option to pay once and never pay anything more?

edit: from premium member page i understand the point of private property, but what if i want to create multiple locations?

  7. Hello, im a new SL user and i have couple questions regarding to it

    1. When uploading a model do you have to pay for every upload or for the uploaded model slot? I mean, if i upload a model, notice i need to update minor changes to it in the 3d modelling software - now i have to upload it from scratch and pay ~same price again? Because model and textures sure doesnt look the same in the modelling software and SL, so changes will have to be made.
    2. All models are rendered in real time (i know quality depends on each user settings tho)? What if i pre-bake the shadows on the model texture, can i then disable realtime shadow rendering for the model?
    3. I want try out creating and selling 3d models and textures, what are the most popular things people buy

    Thank you very muchos!
