  1. Thanksfor the replies, guys! Now I at least know where to start ^^ EDIT: One thing though; Machinimatrix is trying to sell this "Avastar" blender addon for creating avatars in SL. That's just... nonsense (to use a milder word for it). Blender can obviously export in the format SL uses (that, or there'd already be a free plugin available), and if its for generating character meshes, Project Human and ManuelLab are both quite free.

    Beginner help?

Hey there! I finally got a computer powerful enough to run Second Life, so I thought, why not? Then instantly got dissappointed by what is avaible for free to customise, or even just make, my character. But why rely on others when you can do it yourself? Yes, I do, in fact, have plenty of knowledge of how to model 3D (characters and whatnot) and my preffered program is Blender 3D. The problem is, I'm not finding any really helpful getting started tutorials. I want to make my own character fromthe ground up and I need to know how Second Life works with these kinds of things. Obviously what I need are the basic bones that SL uses to animate character, with which I can assign bone heat/weight paint the appropiat body parts to. But I'm also presuming that SL is not so easy as just doing a bit of weight painting > import > profit. What I've noticed is that the head, hair, upper body, lower body (including legs), hands and feet are all seperate meshes. So I'm presuming I have to model all those seperately. Does this mean that equipping clothes/items works a little a-la Skyrim/TES games? (Where the armour/clothing item replaces the body part). Also, what 3D format do I export my models to? How do I import models and textures to SL?
  3. That was part of the process of elimination what I tried when looking on how to reduce lag Suffice to say, it didn't make an all too significant change. The only time I ever got it running within playable parameters was when I accidently dropped my character into the oceon on the starter/newcommer island
  4. Damn, and here I was thinking there was actually an enforced poly cap/texture resolution cap on everything (since its an MMO and all). I guess half a million people need to relearn that low poly can look just as awesome when used effectively. Speaking of which; I hardly noticed any normal-mapping in-game. Is that a GE restriction or is it because nobody actually uses normal-maps?
  5. Gaaah! I wish there was a multireply button somewhere!!! Right, so OnLive is a dead end. Yes there is OnLive for Linux, but it runs like... like...... you know that feeling when you step in dog poop? Yeah... Also, running OnLive SL on the go thingy is not an option because I don't have any funding for a monthlypaid subscription of any kind. Now for the actual replies @Kelli May Thats crazy. Apparently Game Debate isn't so reliable with there system specs as they claim to be. Funny that though, I played Star Trek Online with lag (but not unplayable lag) and at the lowest settings it still has much much better graphics than Second Life. Here in SL it doesn't matter what settings I put it on I still get an equal amount of lag (I tried going to a nearly completely empty sandbox with like one or two avatars around and I still had lag). Can't be the net conection; I play games like Team Fortress II with no lag at all. @BornToTease Those are some sweet specs! I myself am looking into getting a laptop from Lenovo with a dedicated GPU. If it can play the latest on max, why not SL hey? @Drew Bhalti Nope, didn't forget draw-distance; its already on lowest setting. I've been looking up on my laptop again (for sake of referrence, its a Lenovo Easynote LE11BZ) and its considered the worse reviewed laptop in the past decade with a rating of 60% poor. Guess that says a lot. So... I suppose I have to suspend SL till I can actually get something worth the attention to run it on...
  6. 1.4 Mhz is just a complete disaster Anyway, yeah, I know what you mean. Though things are look up; apparently there IS an OnLive client for Ubuntu (the very first result on the google search). But yeah, thanks ^^
  7. First off, wanna say "Hi"! Despite knowing about it for a long time... basically when it first came out, I never joined Second Life till now. So I'me very new and quite curious as to what all the hubbub is about with this thing ^^ Right, now to my problem. Now my laptop isn't very high end to begin with. It has a 1.4Ghz AMD processor with an integrated graphics card. The most impressive on the thing is its 4GBs of avaible RAM. Also, I'm running Ubuntu, lates avaible (14.04 I believe). When I looked up the minimum requirements for this game it said this: 512Ghz Processor 1GB RAM ATI HD 4000 (or something like that, not sure what it said for the gpu). Game Debate gives me a Golden Tick for RAM and CPU power and a Grey Tick for GPU power, I should be able to easily run this at full speed in the lowest settings at least. But I'm getting major lag. As in 5-10 fps lag! Also, when I start up the game the player says I'm way below minimum requirements. I did a bit of reading and found out that there are different players out there for the same game, perhaps there's one thats a little less demanding for Ubuntu? Thanks in advance for any help ^^
