  1. I already checked, and there is absolutely no light emitting from the teeth. It's not set to full bright, and there is no glow.

I was not wearing a facelight either.

In addition, this only happens after i attach the alpha. And it doesn't look like it's emitting light, it looks like a distortion.

And yes I went to all of the people I bought skins from, but only a few of them had slink appliers for the skins that I actually purchased. Therefore I have to manually match the hands for those skins. Out of all the skins I own, if I only wore the ones that came with appliers, I'd be limited to wearing 2 skins, which is not an option.

And honestly, I feel that my avatar actually looks better without advances lighting. My avatar actually looks duller in appearance when I have it turned on, which is probably why I've had it turned off all this time.

  2. So I joined the party and bought some Slink mesh hands today. Upon reading the instructions, the creator instructs the following:

"Ensure your basic and advanced lighting is enabled in your viewer preferences/Graphics.  If not, you won't be able to match your arms effectively and you will always see the attachment point."

I'd had advanced lighting turned off prior to this point, and upon turning it on, i notice that my prim teeth disappeared.

My prim teeth actually came with an alpha that I wasn't using. I wasn't using them because I could actually get the teeth fitted perfectly fine without it.

So upon noticing that the teeth disappeared, I put on the alpha, assuming it would help.

    It..... did not.

If I turn advanced lighting back off, everything looks fine, but the attach point on the slink hands will be visible.
If I turn advanced lighting ON, the hands will look fine but I won't be able to wear the teeth.

This is what the problem looks like: wth-lighting.png

And here are my current settings (with AL -on-)

    settings.png

Also, I notice that when advanced lighting is turned on, my avatar in general has a -duller- appearance (the highlights on the skin and clothes seem to diminish).

    • What am I doing wrong here?
    • How can I fix this?

    [EDITED TO ADD]
    Also, I'm using Firestorm 4.4.2

Again, I would certainly love it if mesh creators and others who make design components (textures, sculpties .... ) would produce demos, but I can understand why they usually don't.  Those who produce retail products, especially clothing, are a different matter. They do have incentives.  People buy a lot of clothing.  They rarely have a model to examine in world, so they have to rely on photos if there are no demos.  Most important -- and unlike architectural components and non-mesh clothing -- they can't just adjust a bad fit.   And many of them do write reviews. Some even read them.  A designer who doesn't respond to that sort of incentive is foolish.

    That's exactly my point.

  4. Yes, I now remember how to see such information via inspect or the edit menu.

While it would be effective, I'm not very excited to pay full price for something just to find how who they bought the mesh from.

And yes I can learn to make my own meshes but as I've said, I'm very new to creating on SL and I'm still learning the basics. I think diving into meshing at this point would be premature.

  5. I understand your points, however when it comes to clothing meshes, it takes a mere 2 minutes to watermark the existing texture with the word "demo" and send it to your merchant outbox. If spending that extra little bit of effort can mean the difference between making a sale and losing out, why risk it? Why GIVE someone a reason to NOT buy from you??

Not everyone reads reviews, but I do, especially when I see that they're -bad- reviews from multiple buyers. Reading reviews has saved me many many lindens that would have been otherwise wasted on items that were defective.

And I'm fully aware that there are items that you simply can't provide a demo for. But if you're charging 1500L for a mesh clothing item and you cba to provide a frickin demo, then you're someone I don't want to deal with.

  6. I agree with you on all points, but I'm very new to the creating side of SL so I have no idea who can be trusted and who can't.

In a culture where the rule of thumb is "buyer beware", It feels like a huge rip-off to have to PAY for something before you can even see it, which is exactly what these meshers expect us to do when they refuse to provide demos.

Yes I could buy something ready made with a demo, but if that person actually made it the way they were supposed to, the mesher's name won't appear on the mesh anymore. Meshers typically don't like their names showing up on other people's creations because they're the ones who get contacted if there's a problem with the product, instead of the actual creator who sold it to them. So meshers usually tell their buyers to make a tiny transparent prim  and link it to the mesh item so that their name's appear instead of the mesher's.

All of that to say, I'd have a hard time with that option, but it might be doable lol

  7. Demos are provided for many reasons, not just for fitting purposes. But fitting issues is not my concern.

My concern is possibly buying something that ends up not looking like the photo at all, or buying something that ends up having defects that were not visible in the photos (for example: mesh pants that look great from the front, but the butt is misshapen, so they only provide a photo of the front view), -or- buying something, only to find that the UV map was done poorly (for example, the left side of the map is significantly smaller than the right side, making it nearly impossible to properly texture, or the map doesn't line up properly, or the wiremap is scaled so small on the template that it's impossible to add any fine details. etc, etc.) I've never relied on shadow maps and don't intend to start now. I'm more concerned about the wiremap itself being accurate and easy to use.

Not every mesher has an in-world store. The ones who don't offer demos usually don't have an in-world store. So we can't rely on that being a solution. It's pretty much a game of chance.

  8. I'm very new to creating on SL. I've been looking through many full-perm mesher's stores on the marketplace only to find  that the all ones that catch my eye don't have demos provided!

    WHY?!

I know it's the mesher's discretion whether or not they provide demos. But why risk getting tons of bad reviews from people who bought them and were surprised with a mesh that has abnormalities/imperfections, or an unusable template, simply because they cba to upload a demo mesh?

And why risk losing out on sales from the people who don't buy anything without seeing the demo first?

I just find the whole thing to be a bit self-defeating.

I suppose I'm only even ranting about this, because I'm frustrated with searching.

Part of me wants to risk disappointment and buy the meshes anyway, but the more responsible side of me says "No Demo=No Sale".

Another issue I'm seeing is that I'm seeing a lot of reviews where the mesh itself is amazing but the template/UV map is unusable/ poorly made.

Who can I go to that has nice meshes, good UV maps AND DEMOS??

  9. 1: Shapes on IMVU are not modifiable. Never have been, and unfortunately never will be.

2: That's not how -all- (or even most) bodies on IMVU look. Many many creators come up with bodyshapes in all kinds of sizes that are much more proportional and actually quite lovely. but they're... I suppose in SL terms you'd call it "rigged". Because you can't modify the actual body shape, you can only add your clothing textures to it.

I've been there since 2007, and sadly, that particular shape is quite popular on imvu, I'll never understand why.

SL has IMVU beat in a LOT of ways, but IMVU has certain advantages over SL as well.

  10. It's a mesh dress so they wouldn't come with invisiprims... would they? I havent made any mesh clothes yet so I don't exactly know how mesh clothes work.

But I do know that i was -not- wearing any invisiprims. Arent' those only used for shoes anyway?

    *is noob*

  11. I... know how to do a clean install of firestorm. The recent updates mandated it. That is not the issue. This issue actually presented itself  before the update, but i wasn't sure about what exactly was causing the crashes until now, once i realized the sequence in which the crashes would occur (they'd only happen when trying to use .tga files, and would happen immediately upon selecting those files).

There was no delay in selecting the files, the viewer would just crash immediately upon selection.

I suppose pngs will have to work.

I'm still perplexed about the esc button hot resetting my camera view though...

  12. It's odd, I made a new tga file and tried to use it and the viewer immediately crashed. When I logged on and tried to use the same tga file again, it worked without any problems. This makes me even -more- confused.

The tga files that were causing the crashes aren't corrupt. I can open them up in photoshop and even use them on other programs just fine.

  13. I've been trying to create with some old targa (tga) files that I've made, but whenever I try to use some of them, my viewer crashes as soon as the file is selected.

This doesn't occur with -all- of my tga files, some of them I can use just fine. I save them all in the same manner, so I'm not sure what's causing the crashes.

Why am I crashing and how can I prevent it??

And also, my Esc key has suddenly decided to stop resetting my camera view. there's nothign wrong with the keyboard,  is there something i need to fix in my settings to get this working again?

    [Using Firestorm 4.4.2]

Do I need to file a Jira?

  14. No worries! I'm very new to creating on SL so I'm always glad to know when i've made any kind of error. :)

What's even more weird to me, is that the movement was visible even while the wrinkles and flare sliders were set to zero (i think they're zero by default).

Apparently this is one in a long list of bugs that LL considers to be not important atm :/

  15. Thank you! I was actually creating a pants layer and had the length set to 100, so I changed it and that seems to have fixed the issue. However, the issue will present itself if I ever decide to make a pants layer that requires full length. :/

I agree that it was poorly implemented, whatever their intentions were. Do they ever plan on fixing it?
