  1.       TDR error always gets blammed on the graphics card, but in reality it could be caused by several things.  The error comes from the ability for the system to respond in a predetermined time frame. For me it turned out that my overclock was too intense for my system.

Point of this is, its not always  the operating system or the graphics driver. Could be hard drive cpu or even ram. TDR's are some of the hardest errors to figure out if you cant read the windows dump logs.

  2. What version of the drivers are you using? Are you using any software like after burner?  Has your bios been updated?  I cant seem to get sl to push  my card to max settings without cranking the settings so it's like that something is still forcing the gpu to max out. Also check your fans 970's like to throttle down to zero and thus the temp rises.

I'm using  MSI gtx 970 Gaming 4g card.

  3. Check your clock speeds and gpu usage I can almost bet that sl is not even pushing that thing. That 980 is more than enough and certainly should yield better results. With shadows on and shadow density the gpu usage will rise but it's not going to get any better. I fought and fought... And gave up. It's sl not your system

  4. Take what I say with a grain of salt but spending a crap ton of money on a gpu for sl only to find out it will still slow down in places with intense mesh builds or a lot of people just isn't worth it. Granted with a 980 series it will be harder to slow down but that's a 500 dollar gpu. If all you are doing is sl and no other gaming it just doesn't seem worth it to me. With the current series of 900 cards they are a tad bit lazy when it comes to sl and I prove it. So I personally think you are on the right track with the 960. I also don't think you really need more than a 500 or 650 watt psu for the 960.

Also the firestorm viewers is beta but I just haven't had any problems. I run my cache from a ram drive to avoid extra wear and tear on my ssd. My first load in of the day is a pain but it's pretty fast after that. I own a gtx 970 by msi. I'd be more than happy to talk to you about my experience.

  5. Many users are experiencing this, I think over all its fustrating to put a bunch of money into a system for a world such as this only to get medicore results.

The best think I ever did was give up on trying to run shadows fulltime.  For those who are experience with Witch 3. Think of them like Nvidia hairworks. "The optimization just isnt there to justify the performace loss"

  6. I would like to clearly state that I do not have a Mac but, Based on  most portable devices and computers I'd say that when processing Intense functions such as Second life or gaming the battery will drain quickly.

You may be able to limit some of that drain by allowed the device to downclock itself thus needing less juice, but your experience will be degraded. I say plug it in when using Second life or anything intense.

  7.  As a owner of a Gtx 970 I would like to inform you that I feel your pain. SL statiscally does not make very good use of the GTX 970 series card. One of the problems that I found with the 970’s are that are “lazy”. What do i mean by this you ask? Well when looking at the gpu usage I wondered why mind was so low. I too posted here and got the same responses you got and I was not satisfied  with those answers. so I kept looking.

It turns out that sl simply does not apply  enough pressure  to push these Graphics cards into their optimal performance. I generally monitor what my temps and cpu and gpu usage are.  I was finding the same low gpu usage you found. I also found that at certain points my clock speed would drop and go from its overclocked state to its default 3d clock speed. This would systematically limit  the fps that I would see in sl.

How did I overcome this ? Partly would a bios mod( not recommended). The other way I overcame it is by realizing that sl oddly enough, does not how the capability of pushing these cards to their full potential without a lot of pressure. That pressure is shadows. In order to force my card to run at full speed and use more than 20 to 25 percent GPU usage I need to turn shadows on and turn the level up shadow detail up.

By turning the shadow detail up and actually driving the settings up this forces the gpu to run at a higher speed. This can equal higher fps but because of the dynamic shadows and mesh in sl it can also tank your fps.

I via bios mod(once again not recommended)  have forced my system to not be as lazy. I Also know that unless Sl is putting a lot of pressure on it, the card will use less Gpu usage. Also I have learned to live without shadows. I love them but it just isn't reasonable to expect to run them full time.

These Nvidia gpu’s were designed to be power efficient . They were designed to work when it was really needed. apparently they don’t believe running sl requires work.  Take a look around the forum. There was a guy with a gtx titan who was disappointed in the performance and fps. He was only getting 40 fps on a gtx titan…..

I am by no means an expert but you are welcome to message me.  These are my personal experiences with this card. It was a complete struggle but I am finally happy with my system.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to detail my experience so that at least you knew i had some back ground with the situation

  8. There is a little wiggle room on the type of processor but mostly solid advice. You can get away with using amd processors  and the multi cpu aspect  my be useful. Keep in mind Buying intels are very solid advice from the stand point of bench marks. They are pound for pound more capable. I don't benchmark race so I ended buying a amd cpu. Otherwise you look at some higer end I5's or I7's. I7 are good since you worth with other programs, not just gaming.

  9. I would like to think that the new Amd cards are worth their money, But On overlcock.net one of the main complaints about a Amd cards is their heat generation and power consumption.

I can say that for the value Amd cards rock.. Sl how ever is a pain in the ass. Most Sl users are not avid pc enthusist and need things to just work.

I would not suggest a video card that requires a user to go through so many hoops to make sure it works. Thats just me.

  10. An R9 290x is a monster amd card but its gunna be pricey.

I hate to be a nay sayer but you will not see consistanly high frame rates without some sorta sacrafice.  Things like turn down your draw distance and don't use shadows are the norm. So don't set your expectations to high when you buy a card. Also think about what ulta means to you. Not everything needs to be maxed to look great.  I prefer a constant fps (nothing below 30 with  advanced lighting and abient occulsion on.) And thats at a draw distance of 96 or better.

Wow this is a necro thread. Sorry everyone.

These are the respective temps for this card. I believe the global thought with gpu's is that it can handle temps up to 90c and be ok. Though at that point I'd say a serious problem is occuring.

My Gpu is overclocked from its default spec's of 1114mhz core clock and memory of 1750mhz memory

to 1281mhz core clock and 1900mhz memory

That nets me up to a 1506mhz boosted clock speed.

I'd say  about 70 is looking about right for the performance not to mention my rooms always a bit warm.

And just to give a bit of back group my  over all system is:

    Amd-8320 overclocked to 4.4ghz

    16gbs of Corsair ram

    Gigabyte Ga-990fxa-ud3 motherboard

Msi gtx 970 overclocked to 1505mhz core clock and 1900mhz memory.

2 cpu fans positioned to blow on my vram and northbridge to keep them cool.

    crucial mx100 256 ssd

    2 1tb hdd's

    corsair tx 750 wat psu.

    So I think i'm doing a'ok.

Btw  Thanks for responding I love sharing pc info with others. Its a rare thing now days.

  12. I just wanted to say to the op, I feel your pain. I started here 3 years ago. Before I had tried 3d worlds. I tried sl probably a good 5 times before I finally stayed. What caused me to leave was sl's poor rez speed on my computer and overall confusing interface on the v1 viewer. The poor rez speed was do to my computer at that time.

When I decided to stay I had disabled most of sl's shinny features. I was then getting 10 fps... In 2012 when I upgraded to my asus g73 gaming laptop I was then able to see the most pretty aspects of sl. I had never seen the shadows before, it was glorious. That started the craving!

I wanted more eye candy at a higher fps because shadows caused me to drop down to 8 to 9 fps. With that I ended up replacing my laptop after 2 years. I bought a custom pc from a friend in which I upgraded some of the pc parts. I replaced the motherboard, cpu, gpu and added a ssd and a another 8gb of ram.

To my dismay I still do not get amazing fps even though I do in games like far cry, assasins Creed, watch dogs. The reason why I mention these games is because I understand the level of performance the op expects.

Op it's just one of the many things about sl. People with high end. Machines are the minority. Linden labs isn't concerned with bring sl up to speed and it shows. So I get you, and I came found that I enjoy other games where the tdp gets pushed on my graphics card. Maybe you should too.
