Good morning Second Life users. My name is Andre Johnston and I am grad student majoring in Project Management at Harrisburg University in Harrisburg, Pa. My thesis paper is on the challenges of managing a virtual team with secondary research in the use of virtual worlds like Second Life as a communication tool. As organizations strive to stay competitive in the fierce economic markets, the need to utilize virtual teams has dynamically increased both on and off shore. Communication technology has helped with the movement to virtual teams but organizations are faced with several challenges that could affect the productivity of the team. As with traditional teams, a good project manager is needed to help keep the team focused and productive. My research thesis is to document the challenges a project manager with the role of virtual manager will face when managing a virtual team. To collect data for my thesis, I will review already published materials and survey project managers in the virtual community Second Life. My motivation for this research stems from my own experience as a virtual team member and project manager on several projects over my five year career as a Pennsylvania state employee. I am not a spammed, or someone trying to exploit the second life community. I am just trying to reach as many people as possible to help collect enough data to complete my thesis so I can graduate.
