Consider this my vote as I have struggled with keeping land in SL based on the fees. Not every person is a content creator but some of  us do want to build or make a place to call home while in SL.

You can actually get notecards with these special characters on them known as ASCII cards and you simply copy and paste them into your display name and save it. You can actually find these cards on the marketplace, but as others say be careful, as some letters may not display properly for others and if you update drivers and such, you make not be able to see special characters in gestures or in display names.

Hello I was having the same problem on Firestorm, I don't know what viewer you are using but I had to uncheck hardware skinning under Avatar rendering. I hope this helps
