  1. The paradox, if there are aliens in Second Life, where are they? I trained my radio telescopes on the heavens, flew spaceships through wormholes... nada. I want to meet the Zenpunks, the boho hippies, the avatars from The Island of Misfit Toys. Or aliens. Humans too. Robots.
  2. Gianni is cool. I can't find an old man skin for it though, and while my avatar looks 30, my typist is older. I tried searching here too Any older skins out there? Hair? Beards? I have been looking, and buying stuff that doesn't fit gianni
  3. Fun is just toolin' my own things, on my own sim. Community is fun too, but it's not restricted to that. I think that expectations of SL were pretty high, but that it's still challenging to develop a real time virtual environment for expression.
  4. Appreciate the input... generated a seperate cache for Firestorm on second disk and everything seems fine, even a bit of lag loss (few FPS) - probably from not having to access the same local cache of two different viewers simultanously on same disk (multiple avvies) - not sure if this will solve the duplication thing yet tho.. will ressurect this post if it occurs - this is on OSX 10.6 btw, probably should have mentioned that before. Thanks
  5. Appreciate all the info's and M.O.'s.... I thiink I will go with a dedicated avvie for constructs and share perms with my RP'er alts. Would seem to be the best of everything described
  6. I run multiple viewers, (Firestorm, Phoenix, Linden) and just ditched Phoenix for the release Firestorm - I also did a complete reinstall of Firestorm and Linden viewers only recently, and when I restarted Firestorm the first time, my inventory cache started loading duplicates in objects only... (thank god!) I am assuming this is just normal behavior and not a bug... but if anyone knows, I'd appreciate info on it... (I'm assuming the Phoenix Viewer, or the Firestorm beta was replicating on the shared cache, but not sure)
  7. yes, and no - prior behavior of the viewer was different, but after several dozen trials and with some help from Netgear, I found a resolution and do not consider this a security risk - which is what my concern was.
  8. I am headed toward building my first RP estate/area...but I've noticed some real differences in approach to how people do this. Some use an alt, others their primary... or teams of the same. I can't think of any advantage right away, other than it being harder to accidentally delete builds, or remain anonymous in the RP scenario. Are there others that might apply?
  9. Thanks, I've been using OSX (snow) and XP - will be good to have this around for Win7 tho. Not sure if it's the same on XP, I know it's gone from OSX, tho I just found Phoenix and it's path (forgot it previously, tho it did no changes) - I'm into about 30 hours of diagnostics on my side, am now about to wipe the disks completely and start over. This all began on both systems on the same day, so most of my focus has been on network, but now that's all new... about only thing left is to wipe the drives.

  11. yes, and I went to Valkyrie (region) with a lot of tiny abandoned parcels and found I could purchase them, but still got no information - blank info where the calculated info should be. Point being, would you purchase land for 50kL if your browser was displaying this behavior?

  13. Ok, well, when I bought my land previuosly, the gold symbol would appear, it would calculate new tier, etc., based on my holdings, and present them where the errror message is - while I can still buy land, something is preventing that data from getting to my viewer, unless it's just up to the user now to bring up any holdings and recalculate it for every purchase. I'm ok with that, (not!) I don't think this is an expected behavior of the viewer, but I suspect it is server side

  15. The parcel may have sold since the photo was taken.. (but if you look closely you'll see the price). However, this is happening on any land for sale, except that which I have the lindens for... but I'm also having significant other viewer related problems - I just am focusing on one that seems server side (after 3 cable modems, provisioning, reinstalls, etc.) - I'm pretty sure it's server side, but still have a few checks to run on my side.

  17. love to be able to do that! I was ready to expand the estate to a decent sized RP area, and another mainland beachfront getaway.... <sigh> life is what it is sometimes. I suspect the failure to fetch and provide these transactions from the databases to be server side, tho the only JIRA report that I found similar to this is from 2010, and affected about 40 folks... just hoped someone had seen it... hmm.. guess I could plop this photo in - not the total of the problems, but they all started around the same time, so it might be related. Sorry if this is too big, just trying to get the text readable. Also just circled "no owner", but there should be other info on the right side of error msg. I am able to buy land - but with all the other errors with the viewer and fetching info, I am holding off till I can get this triaged somehow.
  18. I am not sure where to put this (Jira? here?) - I know I just cancelled my estate because the pitiful tech support was blaming me, then blaming the server, then saying they give up and would notifiy higher up tech support - I've heard nothing yet, so I'm bailing on estate ownership. I'm on an iMac, spring 08 model (nvidia)... anyhow, I had the estate and started looking for mainland. Normally a screen pops up calculating tier changes, how many lindens I'd need, etc. - that broke, on Mac and Windows partitiions. It no longer calculated, but instead provided the message "Cannot buy now, there has been an error while fetching land buying information, and no ownership. I reinstalled, and things got pretty crazy.. on every restart my prefs go to default (again, this is not mac/win dependent) Concierge suggested it was the motorla 6120, tho it has now been tested with a Ubee as well. I got suggestions of everything being wrong on my end - which I got with Charter tech support and found no problems tracing to my estate. (Jira) says this error has to be reproducible to be reported. I do not know what changed. I am on viewer 3.2.1 on Win, 3.1.0 on Mac. That's another oddity - it's showing my last login photo on the login screen from like the day I joined, and it's been thru about 3 bare metal reinstalls. Anyhow, Charter is gonna lend me another Ubee router on Monday; before bailing on me, concierge insisted it was the cable modem and lag and latency on my end causing all of this fuss. I've seen lag and latency cause problems, but none that have lasted 3 weeks and cost me an estate, well, I abandoned the estate (295 a month to sit in tech support is a lot of coin!) Any other ideas, would appreciate!
  19. well, I'd clear cache, but also change a few settings in prefs before restart... lower graphics settings (can re-up them after restart) - set groups to none active... bump up your bandwidth a bit - if it's still at default 500, same with cache, raise it just a bit... (this is where you need to know how fast your connection is - but there is a point of adjusting connection speed and cache size that can slow things down, even if you have blazing internet speeds). Anyhow, main thing is to get you and immediate surroundings rezzed, 9 out of 10 times it's simply cache clearing for me, and reducing graphics for a bit. Someone posted the (yeah it works) idea of swapping something simple, like shoes or a hat... that has worked for me too. Hope some of this helps!
  20. Thanks for the reply.... so with regards to any spikes that do appear, (gaussian blur helped some... just mounds instead of spikes). The heightfield (green) would be divisible from 256 down to make lower terrains if I understand right.... so 128 would be 1:1, or 64 would be 1:2.. etc... ? Sorry - these should probably be based on 0 rather than 1 as the starting point... Is that roughly what you're describing?
  21. Sometimes it's not just large groups, but any group.. it is a definite annoyance for RP, tho I muddle thru... other smaller groups are less likely to have problems, but they all have had problems, from 3 members to 600... it's probably on JIRA, but not a priority
  22. Hello... I've been tinkering with photoshop creating raw terrains with mixed results. So far I've been able to modify some purchased terrains, but I am mainly working with either shapes (aircraft, cars, spacecraft) in an overhead orthographic.. I fill in the appropriate height, multiplier, water levels, and get a recognizable shape, but along all the edges where it joins is spiked looking... for example where an airplane wing meets the fuselage will have big spikes (2-4 m tall) when terrain renders. I'm pretty new to this but find it quite fascinating. I have looked at Terragen 1,2, but they seem like massive overkill for 256msq. Bryce is really promising, but again, tho easier to control than terragen (IMO - no offense), it is also a bit of overkill. I am here for help tho - lol... go for Bryce? Terragen(s)? Balliwick? I mean, I really want to make creative progress without having to fine tune the terrains in world as much as I've had to exclusively using photoshop.
