Paradisio Adasia

I have quite a history with 3d Design... not on any professional level, but I'm tempted to try it with Second Life. I've used most of the mainstream software out there such as 3ds max and maya in college, but I'm curious, is there any program that shines above the rest? I hear a lot of recommendations for blender regardless of budget, and wonder how much truth there is to them for making mesh. Thanks!
