Space bar won’t work

Recently when I type in SL my space bar and back space key will not work. All I can do is type one long word because I can not add a space between each word. This only happens when I am in Second Life when I am chatting. I use a new MacBook and have been on SL for a couple of years and now this problem happens. Any thoughts on how to fix?
