New at Blender and secondlife

hello, does anyone mind telling me what this is (see image below) and how i can learn to achieve this? it's probably a noob thing but i really want to learn to make cute fluffies. i just learnt how to make mesh in blender and made my first bunny based on a real plushie my dad hand made me for my birthday.

The object in the second image is based on the technique outlined in this tutorial Fur Breakdown (I'd also suggest taking a look at the Rye Moss Tutorial which uses the same approach).
