Programatically invite user to a non-open-enrollment group?

I've seen many tutorials on how to script a group invite, but they all seem to end with sending a message with a link to the group page and not actually facilitate the invite.  It seems to me that this would not work for groups which are not open enrollment.  Is there something I'm missing?  Is there anyway for a scripted object to invite someone to a non-open-enrollment group?  Thanks in advance for serious replies!

not via a script, no.

it can be done with a bot program  which is a member of the group and logged in, which usually receives a command from a script telling it who to invite to which group.
