i can't sit unless i'm real close

My avatar has to be virtually on top of an object before it recognises there is a script. 

this is new - i used to be able to hover my mouse over an object  (say a pose stand) across the room and get the chair icon, but no longer.

You have a restriction set via RLV - RestrainedLove Viewer - that's locking @sittp - this restriction prevents you from sitting on distant objects, as a precaution against escaping.

Either determine which object is inflicting this restriction by checking your restrictions list or disable RLV (in Preferences, then restart Second Life) to resolve.
