I'm going to say that it can be difficult to earn money in SL. Most people who make money from non-adult activities do so by making their own clothes, building products to sell (either in an inworld store or the marketplace) doing photography and sometimes modeling.

I tried an experiment a little over a year ago. I created a new AV with the intention of trying to earn money through non-adult means (I had an old AV who was a dancer and I really hated that). Needless to say after about a week (in which from money trees I earned a whole $10L..which was enough to put up a profile picture) I gave up and went back to more adult activites.

The jobs out there that pay well are very difficult to find. Your best bet may be just to buy Lindens. It'll save you the aggrevation of trying to earn money.
