This name does not exist

when I try to look at a friends profile it says "This name does not exist" why does it do that and why cant I see the profile?

If someone cancels her account or it is suspended, afterward when it is restored, the profile isn't. It seems to be a glitch, but the program treats the name as if the person hasn't come back, sometimes for a short period of time, sometimes for months, until it rights itself. Now, if you never see your friend online and she hasn't logged in for a long time, she could well be gone from SL.

Another possibility is to  make sure that you are spelling the name component correctly.

Is using their Display name is needs to be the exact characters used.
