So 9th generation Intel CPU's used the LGA-1151 socket which unfortunately means 9th generation is as new as you can go, after that they moved to a different socket.

Not to say this is necessarily a bad thing but it limits your choices to 9th gen Intel CPUs. If you are willing to look on the used market (good idea, CPUs are a pretty great used purchase) you will find the i7-9700 and i9-9900, some will be 9700K/9900K variants which just means they were multiplier unlocked for overclocking but if that doesn't matter to you don't pay more for a 'K' CPU. Both are 8 core CPUs and very fast, the 9900 has a slightly higher 5GHz single core boost clock vs 4.7GHz for the 9700.

Multi-core performance isn't too critical for Second Life but yeah both will have improved single core performance and they can be found cheap used. These are fast, hot CPUs though so budget in for an improved cooler and also make sure the larger cooler can actually fit in the case - $40-60 should do it, example of a good one here: https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-U12S-Performance-Cooler-redux-1700/dp/B08WPDD6GD

Another SSD would be a good idea as well, does your motherboard support M.2 NVME drives? it quite possibly does, these are much faster than SATA SSD's and 1TB can be had reasonably cheaply. Second Life loves its cache to be on a fast drive and an M.2 NVME drive is the fastest available.

You're probably bumping into the limits of the GTX1080 though, I have one of these as well and it's a great performer still most of the time in SL but it is a 2017 card and busy clubs will bring just about anything down to 30fps or less. The only solution to this is brute force and you might want to consider a new graphics card at some point, the 3080, 4070 and 4080 are the best ways to brute force high frame rates out of SL and would match pretty well with a high end 9700 or 9900 CPU.

Also for what it's worth I've found the 1080 really prefers the PBR viewers, might just be me though. I've noticed much better performance from mine using Firestorm PBR alpha though.

so here is a link to a description of my motherboard

i'm not too sure if it supports a lot

Hi! Wondering if anyone has recommendations for what I should update next or if I really need anything updated, second life runs pretty good but gets a bit laggy when there’s other Avis around or even just in busy events etc.  I just got my graphics card and more ram. I heard it’s good to get 1 or 2T of ssd and also a good cpu with lots of cores/ better single core performance. So yeah if anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated thanks !

That part list is a really odd mix of components, and absolutely would be a low end machine even for the time the video was made.

Given the conflicting information as to what people on this thread are recommending, it might be worth considering how much you can spare to spend on upgrades - that is a major factor in what should be recommended to you.

I mean I'm happy to spend as much as I need to get all the parts that would make sl run smoothly in busy areas or have a high draw distance etc.

Before investing in new hardware, try the new PBR viewer - it has a bunch of performance improvements which may help you get up to speed:

    https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/7.0.0.581126.html

That said, your CPU is pretty anaemic for anything outside of productivity work now, so I'd prioritize upgrading that if you are investing in new hardware.

Ah okay! That's what I was thinking of doing at the start, I watched this video by this SL user and they made a list of stuff for good performance but the video is 2 years old now..

Part List - Intel Core i3-9100F, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Fractal Design Core 1000 USB 3.0 MicroATX Mid Tower - PCPartPicker    -   I was thinking of getting the intel CPU they recommend in the list

It's helpful to also see the information from the viewer ("Help" menu -> <viewer name>, click the "copy to clipboard" button and then paste that info here).  This allows people here to see the graphic settings the viewer is using and reporting on, and there may be some suggested adjustments that you might be able to make to reduce lag a bit.

Okay thanks I'll try doing that now

  7. I've been on SL for quite a long time now but I have never really had a non-laggy experience, the PC I have now is probably the best I've had but it still lags quite a bit and takes forever to load stuff. So I was wondering if anyone who is more tech savvy than me has any recommendations for things to buy for an upgrade? Below is my computer specs if there's anything else I should add please let me know..

Right click on your screen area (not in the viewer, just the regular windows screen area) and select Display Settings.  In the window that opens, scroll down on the right side until you see 'Advanced display settings' - click on that.  On the next screen, click on 'Display adapter properties'.  That should pop up a new small window and in the lower half you should see "Dedicated Video Memory".   What is that value?  You can possibly increase your 'Texture Memory' setting (in Preferences/Graphics/Hardware Settings) depending on what your GPU has.

Here is the Firestorm page that talks about that setting -- scroll down to the Hardware Settings section:  https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/preferences_graphics_tab

In the viewer, click Help and then About.  Copy the info and paste it here.  Then we might be able to point out some settings that could be tweaked for a better SL experience.

  10. Was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a way to run SL smoothly. I usually have no problem in places with not a lot of people/stuff. Like in a skybox I get good fps but whenever i go to a busy event or a club my SL lags like crazy even with max complexity at lowest and lowest draw distance. My specs
