No, it really isn't. The only thing sex is important for is procreation. Other than that, it's all just "fun and games". It took me too many decades and a lot of abuse to learn that hard lesson.

I'm sorry about your abuse. But speak for yourself, SL is all about freedom. You are free to avoid all sex related, but many people enjoy it and the good balance is giving the freedom to engage on it or to avoid it.

Did you mean "Centennials" or Millennials". Your post made me think of this:

Centennials, millenials like me are entering their 30s 😛

    Gen Z, iGen, or Centennials: Born 1996 – 2015. Millennials or Gen Y: Born 1977 – 1995.

Jokes aside, if you think SL can attract younger people you are dreaming. Not at this state.

As silly as this topic seems (at least to me personally), it does raise some interesting questions regarding how people identify with their avatars and what impact that may have on the way in which the metaverse develops.  After all an avatar, by definition, is the representation of an individual, an extension of our physical selves into the virtual world they inhabit, and some will identify more closely with their avatars than others.

While the lookat crosshair is completely innocuous, the fact that someone else can choose to 'attach' one to your avatar and your only choice is to ignore it, either literally or by disabling the option to display them, is clearly a problem for some people and despite how silly that may seem to the rest of us I suspect the question of how the notion of "personal space" translates into virtual worlds and what constitutes an invasion of that space will be discussed at great length as new virtual worlds emerge.  Apparently it's already becoming an issue in Meta.

Mother, 43, has her avatar groped by three male characters in the online Metaverse

So If I cam someone in SL because I like the avi or I am inspecting clothes I am interested to use myself it could potentionally mean I am sexually harassing them?

IMHO is also wrong trying to interpolate RL to SL, given we are in an enclosed, sensorially and movement limited environment where our interactions come mainly from watching each others avatars and typing/voicing.

If in RL someone is staring at you for long periods, by all means go away or say something. But I think we are a little over the top here.

My general impression has been that the people who call the shots at Linden Lab have basically just dropped the ball with marketing during this whole metaverse hype. So many company's have put themselves out there in the past couple of months many of which are crypto scams or other such ridiculousness that have no intention of running any kind of serious "metaverse" platform and yet its basically crickets from Linden Lab when they have a platform that has been running for years and that has all the things that accompany a platform of this age(content, population etc etc).

I'm relatively new to Second Life and thus have sort of fresh eyes on this whole thing compared to some of the other users here. It seems like most everyone wants to change this restrict that, upgrade the engine etc etc but frankly I think all Second Life really needs is some serious advertising. Its not as if it would be difficult to pull people in, this game massively appeals to women who are the #1 consumers/spenders and now more than ever women are online and not afraid to explore online spaces like they may have been years ago. Throw up an add on YouTube spend the couple thousand dollars, market all the bodys outfits heads customization in general and watch as you get a massive influx of new players who are willing to spend the money to play with all these advertised customizations.

Its still so baffling to me that this hasn't been capitalized on at Linden Lab, just YouTube "Second Life" and you will see the angle you need to play. It wouldn't even be expensive lol.

IMHO their problem is bigger than marketing/PR, the product is clumsy for today´s standards, graphics do not look flashy and the entry learning curve is big.

Today's biggest market are centennials, SL age group is a way older as someone already mentioned. In the current days of Tik Tok, Fortnite, memes, NFT and crypto bros they need to cather to the people that have a short attention span, want flashy and colorful graphics, it must be simple and provide instant gratification. SL is just is none of that and they just can´t compete with what seemingly these new "metaverses" will offer, even if they don´t do anything innovative. Remember that Apple didn't invent touch screen.

That´s the problem of earlier adopters, someone said a few posts behind accurately. We in SL are the beta testers of what will come. Will that be good or bad? Who knows.

What I do not understand is why people even have "show look at" enabled? Who cares whether someone is looking at you? Enabling the look at stuff just encourages paranoia.

Imagine creating an avatar with the most expensive and fanciest bodies, skins, clothes, accessories to obviously outstand in the world as a unique avatar and then get mad at being looked at.

Low draw distance. 64m at most. you do not need to take in everything and if you are going to mainland.  it connects to all those sims and pulls those assets too.  so low draw.   also turn off shadows. the fps will increase.

    Thanks I will try that.

You're at the Man Cave event.  It will be busy and laggy.  I have a graphic preset for shopping events.  Draw at 32, shadows off, water opacity, opaque.  There is no reason on any viewer to have graphics maxed out at a.shopping event.  No matter how good your computer is, it will bog down.  It's that simple.

I will try these settings, thanks.

There's a few things that can help. Short draw distance, turn down the graphics quality, the default settings can be optimistic...

I use Cool VL Viewer sometimes. That does have a significant frame-rate improvement. It doesn't have the built-in AO that firestorm has, but for some crowded events that may not matter much. It does already have some of the performance improvement features.

    I will try these, thanks!

I wouldn't say the CPU is chilling. Based on the screenshot it's an i9-9990K which has 16 cores (incl. the 8 hyperthreading ones). 8% CPU load on this machine still means that a single core can be running at 100% (6.25%) - which I guess it is. Since the rendering in SL is still single-threaded and it's basically still using OpenGL rendering techniques from over 15 years ago, this means that SL is CPU-bound. And the required calculations for rigged meshes (so basically all avatars and their clothes nowadays) have a lot of impact on the overall performance - the more avatars being rendered, the slower it gets. This should get better with the performance project viewer, but that is still in development and a buggy mess, so it's still months away from release.

Now David will say again "but it's faster in Alchemy" - well, of course it is because has a) a lot less options to take into account and b) its developer spends hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours - did I already mention hours? - on micro-optimizing everything. Nice for him, but people on the Firestorm team have actual jobs and no time to do that - beside the fact that this already resulted in their viewer being broken beyond repair twice already.

So what actually helps is: Don't use full reflections on everything, don't set avatar render limit to 16 and if there is something that requires an LOD of 3, I would burn it right in front of the creator of that thing and replace it with something properly made.

You are right, I enabled the other cores and I can see it is getting used more

The terrible FPS is currently a Firestorm-only issue. The Firestorm codebase is based on Linden Lab's old viewer code from some time before July of last year. That's over half a year of performance improvements missing from Firestorm, and there has been A LOT of performance improvements from Linden Lab. Until there's a Firestorm update, my advice is to try the official Second Life Viewer, the performance project viewer, or the Alchemy AgileAkita viewer (available from their discord project-viewers channel). Until Firestorm gets updated you will probably experience some or all of the following:

    - Terrible FPS

    - Attachments taking long to attach or detach

    - Wearing the Firestorm Bridge causes excessive lag in some cases. I've found that detaching it sometimes helps.

    - Frequent viewer lock-ups - Perhaps a memory leak of some kind, I don't know?

Seriously, try the default viewer, the performance project viewer, or the Alchemy AgileAkita viewer (if you need radar, built-in ao, look-at privacy, RLVa) etc. You'll be amazed at the difference. Personally, I do miss some of the Firestorm features and hope they'll update it soon but in the meantime, the performance of the other viewers take the cake.

Thanks a lot, this is very insightful. I will go check on those viewers.

  9. I've read some "A.I. Specialist" hyped Meta is gonna be a whole new level, not a "videogame" as Second Life, this alleged AI specialist mentioned... Really I don´t understand what could Meta do differently that Second Life doesn't do.

Unless they come up with some Matrix/Black Mirror crap where you can actually BE in the world I call it BS.
