Strangely enough, I saw many items made for the popular mesh bodies as well as for all the standard sizes so I assumed it was just the designer catering for eeeeeeverybody but I'm glad it doesn't seem that necessary. Thank you for clearing up the standard sizes/fitted mesh dilemma. So far I have the developer kits for Maitreya and Slink but I do intend on starting from the bottom to get a good feel for everything.
Many thanks!

Hopefully you found your files and have a starting place. Keep in mind though that while standard sizing WAS the standard a few years ago, it is not any longer. So after you conquer (and personally I do mean conquer LOL) weight painting and rigging, you will probably want to move on to FITTED MESH which is what a lot of folks are now wearing.
JUST IN CASE you don't already know your way around your favorite 3D modeling program (many of us on this forum use Blender so you will see lots of Blender info) please understand that you need to learn all the basics BEFORE you tackle clothing, which is pretty much the most difficult thing made for Second Life. Not trying to discourage you; all really good clothing designers started at the beginning. Just letting you know in case you didn't. We see lots of new folks coming in that don't really know how difficult clothing is.
Best of success and enjoy the journey.
Thanks for the advice. I was a bit confused on the standard sizes because I saw a lot of designers still selling clothing in the standard sizes on the marketplace and thought perhaps that they also made the standard sizes as fitted mesh and that maybe it just made the application easier. So if I got this right, clothing that comes in "standard sizes" is not fitted mesh and fitted mesh comes with an alpha and is so to speak a "one size fits all", pertaining to the avatar received with the game?

Scroll down to the Avatars section on that page. Standard 5 sizes.zip is the package you are looking for.
Thank you!

I am able to buy it and have it delivered as well but what I want is the mesh "dummies" so that I can import them into Blender to create mesh clothing.

I am a designer interested in designer mesh clothing but cannot access the 3D files in the dropbox link provided on the Second Life Marketplace. (Designers! To download the 3D files of these shapes, follow this link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6003454/Standard 5 sizes.zip)
Is this link no longer available? (https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Standard-Sizing-Package/2894727) And if so, how can I access these files otherwise?
Standard sizing package not available?
