  1. I can't thank all you good folks enough for your help. With the lowering of the draw distance, max complexity and # of non-impostors my SL experience today was much better. To those who suggest a new computer it may be in the cards soon. I will continue with this one for as long as I can stand. Thanks to all again.

Besides these very good suggestions, be sure that SL, its folder, and especially the cache folders, are whitelisted with your antivirus software. SL must download a great many textures, and requiring your AV to vet them all can slow things down.  See: https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/antivirus_whitelisting

I am pretty much a techno Neanderdahl. I'll give your advice a try but I don't have a clue about what you are saying.

Sometimes the viewers can do a sub-optimal job with the default graphics settings. Like enabling shadows on video cards that have no business trying to do that. Turning off shadows is the #1 way to improve performance.

If you're running Firestorm (which I assume you are because everyone does) go to graphics settings and change water reflections to none (opaque). There's a bug that causes a significant hit to performance even if you're nowhere near any water.

All viewers have an option to enable lossy texture compression. I find this helps, especially in crowded situations because running out of VRAM tanks your performance straight to zero, and this cuts SL's VRAM usage in half. More or less. If you have a computer that struggles with basic computer tasks, this may do more harm than good.

Finally, if you aren't using the Linden viewer, download the latest one and give it a shot, they've introduced some excellent performance improvements.

Being techno savvy challenged I us the Second Life viewer. I have heard it can have issues. Thanks for the advice.

The easy, almost flippant answer is "don't hang around crowds and stay away from places that have a lot of textures and objects to render."  You are experiencing the same things we all do.  The greatest causes of lag in SL are avatars and the stuff they carry with them and huge numbers of complex objects with way too many textures on them. You can help in your own small way by keeping your avatar's complexity light and by not buying and displaying things that have excessive texturing or hard-to-render mesh. Other than that, there's not much else you can do with what other people carry or create.

On the easier side, you can control what you see.  Set your own draw distance (in Preferences >> Graphics) to 64m or less, so that your graphic card doesn't have to render quite so many things, and you can set the Maximum Complexity to 100k or less and the number of Non-Imposter Avatars to something like 10 or fewer.  Those last two will reduce the number of avatars that your graphics card has to render fully.

    Thanks, I'll try it.

  7. I have problems with lag anytime I am around other people or on a sim with a lot of "stuff" (buildings, objects, etc.). I don't have a lot of experience with setting my preferences nor am I tech savvy with a computer. I would appreciate any tips. Thanks

  8. I have been trying to purchase an item in the SL Marketplace and send it to a friend since 2pm slt.  The item is in my cart but when I try to checkout sl goes to a blank web page with this address

I have tried different viewers, clearing cashe, turning off firewalls.  Nothing is working.

  9. I have two avatars.  One can log in fine.  The other starts the login process and gets either the region has started the logout process or sl shuts down completely.  This just started less than an hour ago.

Update;  Now it is happening to both.

Second Update:  I think it may be a computer problem.  I have an hand-me-down older model Gateway laptop.  The cpu fan is running a lot.  I think it is starting to overheat.  SL draws a lot of power.  This computer may be about to give up the ghost.
