We have over 100 Haunted Destinations currently on the Second Life Destination Guide, and there will be more coming over the next couple of weeks. There are also some wonderful events going on that we wanted to highlight today.

I went through the Boystown Haunted Experience today and it is incredible! I screamed several times, so many jump-scares! It's kind of like an escape room idea, and I made it to the end! Check out their trailer on YouTube.

The tradition of a toy bear that may be given out by Linden Lab employees, and our Mole contractors, to Second Life Residents began in early 2005. The idea was simple: Anyone can ask a Linden or Mole for their bear. Each bear is personally crafted by an individual Linden or Mole, adding their own unique twist, and in some cases can be one of their first experiences in building. A special thank you to Claire Atheria & Maryposa Papillon (Maryposa Paine) for putting the Bear Castle together with 450+ Linden and Mole Bears!

  2. Hello Residents!

If you run an inworld service that logs in as a scripted agent (aka, a bot), or maintain a Third Party Viewer, please pay attention. This blog post is for you. :)

We are making some changes to improve the security of Second Life!

On November 1st, 2021 we are going to be discontinuing the use of two older security protocols, TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, on our login services. We’re doing this to increase the security of everyone on the grid.

In March of 2021 the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) officially deprecated these two older protocols, and now we’re gonna do the same. TLS 1.0 was released in 1999, and TLS 1.1 was released in 2006, and while they’ve had a good run, it’s time for them to enjoy a nice retirement into Internet history.

On Wednesday afternoon this week we inadvertently turned off TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, and we received reports that several inworld services (such as older bots and some very old Third Party Viewers) were unable to log in. Since we hadn’t given Residents any warning this was going to happen, we turned them back on this morning. We want to make sure folks have a chance to update their services before we turn them off again permanently on November 1st, 2021.

If you were impacted by the sudden removal of these older security types this week, we’re sorry they were turned off without warning. We should have communicated it better. We also want to thank you for taking the time to improve the security of your service! The grid will be safer for us all as a result.

For everyone else, you have nothing to do! Our viewer, and almost all of the popular Third Party Viewers have been using the latest versions of TLS for years. You’re all set!

Looking forward to a more secure Second Life,
    April Linden, Gridbun

    Hello Residents of Second Life!

Over the last few days, Residents using certain email providers may have noticed that they are not receiving all email notifications for events such as Marketplace purchases and Offline Messages.

Email has come a long way since it was first introduced to the world in the 1960s. There are many factors that affect the deliver-ability of a message, and algorithms which affect it are constantly being updated.  Sometimes things go awry despite best intentions - such as certain phrases being flagged as indicative of spam, or the volume of messages sent in a certain time frame.

Second Life is a complex beast and not all our email sending practices are as good as they could be. We are re-examining these practices and we’re going to do better to make sure our Residents are able to get the information they need.

There are some things you, as the recipient, can also do to better ensure deliver-ability, such as having email filters, white-listing certain contacts, checking your spam folder and marking legitimate messages “Not Spam,” and even contacting your email providers about certain emails.

If you are experiencing issues receiving emails from us, you may also want to consider updating your email temporarily to a different provider (for example if @yahoo emails are failing, try a @gmail account), verifying your email address with us (offline IMs, friendship offers, auctions, etc all require a verified address), and white-listing (add sender to contacts) Second Life messages to ensure you receive them in the future. It’s always best to use an email account that is only accessible by you.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused and will provide updates once available.
