In Second Life, Pride extends year-round! In March, we introduced our first (of many) Community Pages, and today we are excited to announce our new LGBTQ+ Community Page as a new resource to amplify and educate new and existing Residents about the many diverse LGBTQ+ experiences and communities inside Second Life. These pages feature interviews from members of the LGBTQ+ community, images of pride inworld submitted by the community to our official Second Life Flickr Group, as well as destinations and videos of places you can explore and meet like-minded Residents. Whether you're looking for a place to share your story, find friends or partners who understand what it's like being LGBTQ+, or just want to connect with other people who are going through similar experiences as you, we hope this page will be a great resource for you! The Second Life community pages are living projects and we plan to continue to update and add more. We have just redesigned them, so watch out for an update on our previous Black Culture Community Page soon. We’ve been busy interviewing other community members for future pages so look out for our upcoming Anthro community page announcement! Happy Pride Month! Our annual commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall riots and the long journey from there to here, ongoing civil rights progress and struggles, personal journeys and right to self expression. What are you doing this year? In or out of SL? Found anything fun in world? Post any pictures of decorations and outfits, merch made by other residents, events, celebrations and protests. Please note. This is not the time or the thread to debate the "LGBTQ+ agenda", the rights of LGBTQ+ people to exist or be visible in or out of SL, air out the ole free speech or get into a political fist fight.

Christopher Street in Second Life is a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community to come together, connect, and be themselves. In June of 1969, in a part of NYC known as the West Village, police officers raided one of the most popular gay bars on Christopher Street named the Stonewall Inn. They began beating members of the transgender community, which led to a backlash from those who were present and fed up with what had been happening for years. That was the beginning of the Stonewall Riots that started on Christopher Street and continued all over the Village area of NYC for the next few days. They are the reason you can call yourself Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Pansexual, Trangender, Non-Binary, Queer and anything else you prefer to identify with, without being arrested for doing so. The virtual Christopher Street in Second Life is inspired by these events. It is a place of love where Residents can feel safe and learn about each other and explore their sexuality and gender with people like themselves, who care and understand. Tabitha Littlepaws, the owner of Christopher Street, gave the streets similar names as those from the neighborhood in Greenwich Village. She tells us why she chose this place, “not just because this was where the LGBT movement was said to have begun, but because we want to show the people of Second Life that we too can rise above the hate and start a community of individuals that believe in similar ideals. Like the people that were involved in the peaceful protests that occurred after the uprising, we too can bring together a movement in our virtual world that will show everyone we can be strong and overcome our differences to live together in peace. We are creators, we are builders, we are dancers, we are artists, we are poets, we are philosophers, we are gamers, we are doctors, we are whatever we choose to be. We are gay, we are lesbian, we are bisexual, we are asexual, we are transgender, we are straight but not narrow, we are whatever we choose to be. We are feelings behind the pixels, we are love!” What Tabitha offers the community is a place to call home. She says, “There are very few if any communities in SL that provide basic housing for free. There are very few if any communities that will provide a new creator the chance to have a storefront to display their talents for free. We want to give everyone a chance to be part of a community no matter what their financial status might be. We only ask our residents and shop owners for a donation that they can afford, whether this is $1L or many more, we do not log or let other residents know how much anyone gives to our community.” Tabitha’s partner, Penny Cobalt, lives in a part of the world where the LGBTQ community faces a lot of hate and she can only be safe as long as she keeps a low profile. Penny owns a LGBTQ dating site in Second Life, Love Me Tender, that is located in Christopher Street. The latest “Second Life Destinations” video explores the new community event Pride Festival SL, which runs from June 24-28. Dimitri Cloud (Juicy Mango in SL), who co-founded and manages the event with Eva Artemisia, organized the event as a way to bring the community together during the pandemic. “We went through this pandemic worldwide, and we think that more than ever, Second Life is a safe hub, a safe place,” he says. The theme for Pride Festival 2020 is “We are fire!” Fire can be sublime and life-sustaining, a powerful energy that provides warmth and light. The colorful stages pop with energy against the desert backdrop, and so will your outfit! The organizers feel that it is so important to remind each other we are not alone during times like these, and we couldn't agree more. The event will feature parties with live DJs and music, shopping, gifts, and more. Check out the official Facebook page for instructions on how to join the contests and raffles. There will also be a fashion show art gallery. Not to be overlooked is the wide aisle leading to the center of the stage, which is emblazoned with the words "Black Lives Matter," perhaps inspired by the street mural in Washington DC. This event will also feature workshops highlighting the needs for mental and physical wellbeing that marginalized communities don’t always have access to. (Photo by Patch Linden) Today is the kickoff for Second Pride, and as we all know, things are going to be a little different this year. In the wake of many canceled celebrations in the physical world, we hope to make this Pride Month extra special, because the dignity in representation is priceless. Pride celebrations have become more and more inclusive over the years, going from gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender representations to a broader spectrum of gender expression and orientations. The phrase “Silence is Complicity” has appeared on many banners over the last week, and that sentiment certainly rings true with us. In recognition of intersectionality and the importance of allyship, the organizers have declared that this year’s theme is “together.” We all face different challenges, but standing up for each other provides the strength to keep going. Come help us put the unity in community ❤️ There are so many awesome events scheduled to celebrate love and equality.
