Hi everyone, I've been battling with alcohol for the past years while also living in a city where there are no support meetings and I really wish there was something like this inworld. I think Second Life can be a powerful tool for support groups, not just because you can reach them from anywhere you are in the world, but because some people might feel more comfortable behind their avatar than in real life. I’m not saying they are a replacement for real life meetings, but I’m sure they are a great way to start. I’m thinking about creating a space with useful information about alcohol and regular meetings at different hours to be able to reach as many people as possible. But I need some people to join me in this effort. I need: · People who have been through substance problems and/or know how to deal with them and are willing to come aboard into this project. · Hosts are really welcome too, I want to be able to cover at least two different time zones. If you don't feel comfortable talking via Voice chat that's not an issue, I'm actually thinking about having some text only meetings too. · I’m not looking exclusively for hosts though, if you have some ideas that might make this project even better you are welcome to join! · I want input from as many people as possible. Why would this work? · Statistically in the US, 17.6 million people, or one in every 12 adults, suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence along with several million more who engage in risky, binge drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems. · That’s over 8%, which is huge, and the average percentage is bigger in Europe, there are only three countries that drink as much or less than the US: Italy, Norway and Sweden. · All other European countries such as the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece score much higher than the US and those in Eastern Europe are some of the most alcoholic countries in the world. · I think that with these numbers in mind we could manage to organize regular support groups with similar attendance rate as those in real life. My main worries and where I need help: · How to reach out, I’m sure that there are enough people in second life that would benefit from this idea, but they first need to find out about it. · I also would appreciate a lot help with building this project. I’ve been thinking about a Chip system to count days etc. Please contact me via inworld and I’ll make sure to reach out to you if you are interested in helping me out! PS: This is a non profit project.
