  1. Hello all! I tried to do a quick search on the forum but did not find a good thread that talked about this topic, so hopefully I am not beating too bad of a dead horse here. I should start by stating why I do not want to use Photoshop: I am well-trained in Photoshop, as I have used it since 1999. However, when Adobe decided to make it a subscription-only service, I decided that was not for me as I consider myself a casual user who does not use it to make any profit that would help pay the monthly fee. I did it for some drawing and painting, which I have other programs that specifically can fill that need (Painttool SAI, OpenCanvas, Alpaca, Krita) , however I do not have a program that combines drawing/painting and photo editing, which is useful when making textures in SL. If I was selling my art IRL, I would definitely just pay for Photoshop's subscription. It isn't that I am unwilling to pay for software, I just do not like that utlimately Photoshop will cost much more than most other software on the market with its subscription fee (over time). I hope that makes sense. I have thought a lot about getting back into making make-up, tattoos, and clothing textures and feel it would be a great time for me to get back into the hobby that I once found fun. I would love suggestions on other programs to look into or try other than Photoshop and GIMP. I run on Windows, so it has to be compatible with that operating system. Now that I have explained that, ever since Photoshop went to subscription service, I have been searching for art programs that are very user friendly and similar to Photoshop in their menus. I have tried GIMP, and I cannot seem to do much beyond the basics before getting overly frustrated at its poor layout or lack of features (or the features are there and are worded differently or hidden in an obscure menu). Of course, I know there are lots of people who love GIMP and I think it is a great program that is offered for free. I think my problem is that I learned on and used Photoshop for so many years that I get in the program and it feels familiar but then it is suddenly like I am in the Twilight Zone with it. It is strange because I am able to use the other drawing/painting software just fine, however it is well-known that GIMP has a large learning curve and maybe it is just too big for me. A quick Google search lets me know there are other programs, some of which are not free, but offer similar experiences to Photoshop. I was hoping maybe others who use these other programs could chime in with their suggestions and opinions. **BEFORE POSTING A SUGGESTION: DO NOT comment saying one should just learn GIMP or just subscribe to Photoshop. DO highlight what you feel are a few PROs and at least 1 CON to the software you are suggesting. Links to the software should be added (if another user has already posted about the software, a link is not necessary) and any other links (video tutorials, etc are fine to add extra). Hopefully this thread can be useful to other users in the future as well.**
  2. Hi to all, A few clothing makers here have formed a Discord group for makers and new makers to share and find out things on many topics from Blender, 3DMax to Substance Painter to name but a few. If anyone is interested here is the join link. https://discord.gg/Cy3ajtDw Hoping to get a lot of talented and new makers together to share the knowledge, experiences and help make SL the best it can be for everyone.
  3. Its always been my experience that raw snapshots taken in Second Life are not as focused as they could be. They tend to be slightly undefined. Taking snapshots with the Black Dragon viewer makes a difference, but can be very impactful on PC resources. Whichever viewer you use, knowing how to sharpen a Second Life photograph is essential, as its one of those select tools that can help make your images pop. Click here to view the tutorial

  6. waves, im trying to texture a mesh sign i made in blender, i have the sign in the world and the uv map i tested on them inworld and it fitted perfectly, but when i try to do a basic texture in gimp and upload or preview to see how it would look in world it shows up from blank. ive even uploaded it to check and its still blank. its highly frustrating. i tried it on a normal prim and the texture showed up fine! im happy to share the belnder file if its that thats causing the isues as i am beginning at blender so might be something i havent done right there

  8. I've been banging the rocks on my head for about 2 weeks to no avail; need help and icebag. I'm working on a simple mesh kit for a man's coat. I found some very nice quality fabric that the texture creator provides as 1024's, a convenient size to work on and then I know to reduce the size to 512 for use in SL. The kit came with the usual sample textures and shadow/UV map to use as examples for making shadows and so forth. It looks great if I simply slap the 1024 on the mesh kit and set repeats, but then using the kit creator's shadowmap/AO isn't an option with the repeats. I was wondering about the materials slots but don't want a shiny or bumpy look. It looks almost as good with a simple resized and repeated 512 of the plain fabric, very little difference (the example shown is the 1024). With the darker fabrics, this would be fine. When I uploaded it previously, I was not sure if in GIMP I should leave the OLE compression box ticked or unticked. It seems to be better left unticked as the textures came out blurry on upload to the beta grid (or viewing as local textures on main grid). It seems fine now, as a plain fabric, with lossy compression off - is that right? I changed SL graphics preferences following a recent discussion here. The real problem is I'd like to add some shadows for the lighter fabrics. I thought to scale the fabric in GIMP that I would use either "small tiles" to scale the repeats, and then overlay the shadows. But no matter what I do, the fabric (small-tiled, or pattern filled from a pattern I made) comes out blurry. Is there a better way to do this in GIMP so that this nicely tileable plaid-ish wool can show the repeats, yet remain crisp and sharp on upload? I'm sure it's some setting somewhere and I am being a complete doofus. The image below is crisp, but I can't get that effect unless it's the plain fabric, repeated in the SL edit window. Grateful for your input! I did mess with my graphics settings (in Firestorm) to increase AA and anisotropic filtering. Should I back off from that?

  16. Hi there - I'm currently experimenting with creating textures and would like to try creating a cellulite effect for my heavy avi. I'm guessing that the best way would be by creating a normal map to simulate the effect? Can anyone offer some advice on photoshop/gimp brushes or effects which would give a decent cellulite effect? Thanks in advance!
  17. I'm just starting to learn Photoshop, which is not easy to learn, but texturing seems even harder. Im trying to find a tutorial to work on a Premade mesh, lets say this Keyhole is the Alpha layer I need to make a border/edge inside, cause that's my problem and sounds stupid, but I don't know how to make it. Key 1 would be the image and the Key2 is the red inner border I would like to add the the alpha. I made it manually just for the example, please don't laugh. I will really appreciate anything on how to do this "red border" in the white alpha, not sure you see the transparency of the keyhole in this case.

I personally use Photoshop. With no special brushes as of yet. So what do you use? Any certain brushes or techniques? (Tell me if this needs to be moved.. Not honestly sure.)
