  1. My goal was to find out which CPU is better for SL (without paying a 500 bucks worthy CPU like the i9-9900k) I'm aware SL doesn't use multi-cores, but single-core: so in theory it benefits from the highest clocked frequency. I finished my CPU performance comparison FPS-wise in SL with same hardware/settings/viewpoints/avs/etc. for: Ryzen 5 3600 vs. Ryzen 7 1700x [stock + overclocked] check it out here: https://youtu.be/VDpN-w-0sts Intel i3-9350kf vs. i5-9600k [stock + overclocked] check it out here: https://youtu.be/my-J89BM6Nk Conclusion below the vids.
  2. Hey Guys! So I'm an old user, trying to revive my over 6 year old account on the same exact laptop it used to run so amazingly on. I've watched a few youtube videos with tricks and tips, which maybe helped about 1% or maybe that's just my optimism.. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So if anyone here knows of ways they found to work with them, pleasee share! I'm dying with all this lag, it's immense and triggering lol. I have a: Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13"/ macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6 with Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB A year or two ago, I had to wipeout my laptop and change the hard drive because it died. I did this on my own and changed my 1TB to a 2TB, since it fit and I thought things would run faster since this is my only laptop I can use. (it sucks, yes i know, macs are the last thing to use for gaming) 🙄🙃 So please, anything is HIGHLY appreciated 🙏🏼❤️✨
  3. Hello. I have been using second life viewer for years. Lately I notice that it's incredibly slow even if I use an high-end pc. In detail I can tell you that the last good viewer I used was the version "Second_Life_5_0_6_326593_i686". The next updates had as result a consistent cut off of fps ( about 3X less fps than the fps I got with the viewer version I mentioned above). I've been waiting since August 2017 for a better viewer or something that run smooth like the version Second_Life_5_0_6_326593_i686,I opened a Jira, but nothing. What is still strange is that looking in the wiki there are ways to run older versions of the viewer and I did this when the first newer versions with lower fps appeared. The result was each time I used the earlier vesion(Second_Life_5_0_6_326593_i686) my fps were raised up by 3X than the fps I get with the newer versions of the viewer. My question is. What has changed in sl since the release Second_Life_5_0_6_326593_i686? that I know by then animesh and bake on mesh were still at embryological state of projecting Is it, by chance, that newer versions support only directX12?
  4. Majority of the time I have terrible FPS on SL. Around 8-30FPS Max Currently I'm using Firestorm but have tried other viewers with no benefits. I run pretty much any video game out on max settings with good FPS but SL runs like crap. I've also had many friends with lesser computer specs be getting 60+FPS while I'm running at 30-FPS Windows 10 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Intel Core i7-4820k CPU @ 3.70GHz 8GB Ram Firestorm is running from a SSD with plenty of diskspace. Attached is a picture of GPU/CPU/RAM usage in a sim packed with poorly optimized avatars to give you an idea of usage under heavy load. Graphics are maxed in that picture. However even if I set all the graphics settings to absolute bare minimum the FPS continues to be extremely poor with no real increase. I run in 2560x1080 resolution but even if set at a lower resolution it does not help. Running literally nothing but SL and it still doesn't matter. Please help, this is very frustrating.
  5. Hi all, just got myself a 1070TI and still got some money to spend, so wanting to see what I should upgrade next. Currently, I am running: GPU: GeForce Nvidia 1070ti RAM: 16GB ram (2x 8GB sticks in 2 ports) CPU: Intel i7 4790 (8CPUS) DAC - Intergrated RAMDAC I will also link this benchmark test which shows off all my hardware I am currently using so you can grasp more information than me typing out everything in a DX diag. It is a bit old, so i will explain the edits as well to it: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/8530914 (EDITED BENCHMARK: THIS IS THE NEWEST RESULT: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/8819520 ) Now using a SSD 250GB Samsung drive. along with the HDD shown in the benchmark. And I have upgraded to windows 10 64 bit Enterprise I am wondering if i need to upgrade my CPU, or RAM, yet a friend told me the CPU might be the better option if I were to upgrade to a I7-8700k or higher, yet, a I7-8700k would fit my price range better. Thanks for any input
  6. A few people have asked about this in the "A Conversation with Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg" thread so rather than derailing there, I'm making a new thread here to give people some insight into this issue. To get a higher and more stable framerate in SL would require LL to really discourage poorly optimized content in SL while also providing tools to encourage better optimized content, and make it easier for content creators to optimize their work. As well as tools for consumers to make more educated purchasing decisions, and disincentives for purchasing content that uses excessive amounts of resources. For example, excessive texture use is far and away the biggest framerate killer in Second Life right now. Based on months of observation using a viewer used to demonstrate some VRAM management tools, I'd say that your average avatar is walking around with over 200MB worth of textures. Avatars exceeding 500MB of textures are not as uncommon as you'd think. I've regularly seen avatars pushing 800MB to a GB of textures. That's one full gigabyte of data that you have to download and hold in your graphics memory, for one single avatar. There are sims out there using over 10GB of memory just on textures alone. Why do people do this? Because there's absolutely nothing to discourage them from doing it except the performance hit, and too few people know how this issue affects them so they blame it on bad viewer code or some other strawman. How much VRAM does your videocard have? Even if you have an expensive, high end gaming card you probably only have 8GB of memory. Chances are, most of us have much less than that. Also, VRAM isn't just for textures. Shadows, DoF effects, light effects and more all need VRAM. This makes the "just buy a better videocard" argument unhelpful, to put it politely. And there are people who will argue "but SL doesn't load all those textures at full resolution all at once!" ignoring that as you move and cam around SL you're hardware is constantly sifting textures in and out of data. Constantly moving that much data in and out of memory is a huge burden on both your videocard and your bandwidth. Go to a sim built by someone who understands VRAM issues and you could easily find yourself experiencing double or triple the FPS you typically experience in Second Life. At least until one of those 1GB avatars wanders into view. In some cases, after optimizing an environment I've found myself enjoying FIVE TIMES the fps compared to what I saw before optimizing texture use. That fact alone should be enough to prove the point. You want higher and more stable FPS? LL needs to step up and start discouraging excessive resource use in content. Giving users a tool to derender avatars with excessive VRAM use. Tools that let users see the VRAM use of all of their attachments and rezzed objects. LL needs to start including texture use in Land Impact calculations, so that objects with excessive VRAM use cost far too much LI for anyone to want to use. LL needs to add texture memory to the information marketplace sellers can display in their listings, so people can make informed choices and start avoiding content with high memory use, or content which fails to list memory use (just like people tend to avoid products that fail to list land impact cost). Give people tools and all of this can be super easy, for both content creators and the people who buy that content. There's good, easy to learn tricks to reducing memory use but LL doesn't make it available through any official channels. There's no official SL building tutorials, and the tutorials out there are made by other residents, typically those who do not have any experience or education regarding game design. LL needs to improve the "jelly doll" feature so the resources used by avatars get released when they're jelly-dolled. Right now their textures, at least those that loaded before the avatar gets derendered, remain in VRAM. And that's just textures. Avatar attachments, not limited by LI costs, tend to be far too high-poly. Some of the mesh bodies out there are absolutely ridiculous. There's tricks people use to get around reasonable LI and draw weight costs (avoid any content where the creator recommends you increase your LOD threshold), LL needs to close those loopholes and rework LI and draw weight to be more useful. To better encourage good content creation habits, and better discourage the bad habits. It's very important to note that discouraging bad habits does not mean reigning in creative freedom, or making content creation more difficult. A lot of people hear what I've posted above and are terrified that if LL did these things it would drive them out of SL. That's simply not the case. Optimizing is easy! It's just a matter of learning where you need extra texture detail, where you can get away with less, and learning not to create textures that are filled with unused space. Tell people new limits are coming, give them the tools to work within those limits, the time to learn to use those tools, and it will not be a problem. According to LL some of these tools are coming! That's a very good sign that in the future we may very well experience a Second Life where higher framerates are the norm. If LL handles this right they could even increase the maximum texture resolution cap in SL.
  7. I have been trying to get in to Second Life on and off for nearly a year now but have had one glaring issue that has been stifling any interest I start to get, a complete inability to even sustain 10 fps 90% of the time. I have looked all over for fixes, toyed with all the graphics settings, tried several viewers including Firestorm, Catsnip, Black Dragon, Alchemy, and LL. nothing software wise has so far worked. My hardware maintains a modest 30fps on ultra on games like GTA 5, Black Desert Online, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and just most games in general. GPU: Evga Nvidia 1050 ti OC edition with 6gb of Vram CPU: AMD Fx 8350 8 core processor at 3.5ghz (only 4 of the cores are physical the other 4 are virtual) Ram: 16gbs of w.e stock junk the desktop came with Storage: 2Tb HD another stock component Internet: Comcast broadband (speedtest.net states 54down/20up with 13ping to the nearest server) If anyone has any ideas as to other possible solutions, causes, or things to try it would be much appreciated. The whole situation seems incomprehensibly stupid as a game with this old of graphics shouldn't need much more then these to hit 30fps when I can play many more graphically intense games filled with a lot more happening on and off screen then I ever have witnessed or heard off in SL. My friend manages 60Fps easy on her computer with a GTX 1080ti 32gb of ram and a comparable CPU but a GTX 1080ti is just overkill for really anything regardless of w.e it is.
  8. Hello and thanks for your time! I'm running a SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon R9 390X (rest of system specs found below) and I just can't seem to get worthwhile FPS in Second Life. Tried with both Firestorm and Singularity viewers. Altered my viewer settings more or less with every setting and seems like I actually get worse FPS with lower settings. Tried altering Radeon Settings programs settings for Firestorm as well with minimal success. I've talked to several friends in SL running other GPUs that actually have lower benchmarks than my own card and they'll be running 50-100FPS with high settings while I'll somehow be running more like 15-25FPS even after turning settings down. This is while we are standing in the same exact sim next to each other as well. In the past I know SL didn't always get along with AMD but I thought that was mainly because of AMDs lack of OpenGL support which has since been remedied. Any tips to improve FPS are greatly appreciated! Radeon Software Version - 17.11.1 (I updated to this one to see if it would help, no change) Radeon Software Edition - Crimson ReLive Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon (TM) R9 390 Series Memory Size - 8192 MB Memory Type - GDDR5 Core Clock - 1080 MHz Windows Version - Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) (64 bit) System Memory - 8 GB CPU Type - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4820K CPU @ 3.70GHz
  9. Hello everyone, I´m currently looking to buy a FPS. I would be interested in offers with GF status and also none. Please send me best way a NC in world (with your serious offer and tier date) in case I might be offline! Thanks in advance!

    Mesh & Lag

Hi All: Is it just me, or does mesh seem to create more lag? I've noticed that the more mesh buildings, caves, etc, that there are on a sim, the more the lag spikes. Plus, I own a 1024 parcel, and I was using a mesh wall (I put up like 6, at 1 prim each) that basically ate up all of my prim count. Personally, for me, I rather like the old prim/sculpty creations, since it seems like there is less lag and such. I'm also beginning to think that NO ONE really builds anymore, because there are so many mesh creations. All a mesh creator has to do, is basically upload their build to see if it will rez...as far as I know, that is. Any thoughts?
  11. So I logged into SL yesterday after being off of it for about a month. I noticed that my client is extremely laggy! Just having on my last outfit is making me lag. Taking it off fixes that but only slightly. I haven't done or changed anything in the last month! I did some testing and found out that my graphics settings only effect fps by 1-5 frames. I can go from low to ultra without a change in the now normal 10-20 frames. Any suggestions on what it might be? I'm on Firestorm 5.0.1 and have reinstalled it and cleared all caches. CPU is being utilized normally and so is my GPU. I should also note that when I now go to any place that isn't an empty sim I get major FPS drops. Average 15 when it use to be at least double that in a 50% crowded sim or just an empty one with lots of objects. I know this because I went around and did some benchmarks after getting my 1070 and i7. My specs: Windows 10 gtx 1070 i7 6700k
