Smog Ferryhill

I have been using different viewers but want to come back to the SL Viewer. On my (newish) Mac, I downloaded the viewer - it seems to be OK generally, but the top toolbar does nothing - i.e. Me / Communicate / World etc. When I click on it, nothing happens - no dropdown list. The problem has never arisen with other viewers (Firestorm / Singularity) on the same machine. Does anyone have an explanation please?

Can I pay lindens to a friend from the SL website, without having to open my viewer to do so? Sometimes I withdraw cash and want to give some to a friend to help her out and I don't necessarily want to go into my viewer and start things happening.
