  1. Thank you, that's very helpful advice. I was wondering if where I clicked on the object made a difference. I tried clicking on the top and bottom and sides, and I even tried to go inside. But when I tried to go inside the object was invisible--transparent from the inside.
  2. Problem solved. Got someone with God powers to come in and roll back my sims a bit. He was also unable to select the orb, but I'll try some of the answers posted if this comes up again. Thanks so much for the suggestions. : )
  3. Help!!!!! I've spent hours and hours building on my regions, and now I can't get rid of a huge orb I made to surround a deserted island. I had just finished building the island and wanted a huge orb transparent on the outside and pictured on the inside, so that when you are on the island you can't see anything for miles and miles. I put the orb right on top of my island and expanded it experimentally to 400 meters by 400 meters by 400 meters. When I then tried to select the orb to change it's textures, I couldn't select it or move it or delete it. I'm sick to my stomach. I did not save my build before I added the orb. What's wrong, and what can be done? I will be eternally grateful to anyone who can help me. In fact, I’ll give you a copy of the island if you can save it.
  4. Damn, I was afraid that would be the answer! Thanks for replying. I hope you are well.
  5. How can I search my inventory for full perm items only?
  6. Like you, I just noticed that I can no longer organize my outfits into subfolders. Bummer. Now I will have re-do all of my previous organizing outside the My Outfits folder. I wish SL had left the bug alone. I agree this move forward is a step backward.
  7. I used to do this all the time. Now I can't, and the My Outfits folder is getting very cluttered. I have made sure I'm not wearing anything that is in the outfits I'm trying to move. But that hasn't helped. I just discovered by reading other posts that we were never supposed to be able to create subfolders under My Outfits. A bug allowed us to, and now SL has fixed that bug. Bummer.. Now I will have re-do all of my previous organizing outside the My Outfits folder. I wish SL had left the bug alone. This move forward by SL wais a step backward for me.
  8. Thanks for the insights. I was pretty certain my computer capabilities weren't being overstretched. But I am having trouble getting the expensive computer tech service I hired to accept that the problem is my computer glitching. They think the problem is caused by Second Life. I think there is a lot larger issue going on here since I'm having more than Second Life problems. For example: Skype no longer works. Audacity no longer works. Camtasia no longer works. You Tube no longer works. Vimeo no longer works. Netflix no longer works. The YouTube Free Downloader no longer works. Even my Spider Solitaire game no longer works. And my cursor randomly jumps around the page when I type. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other problems as well. But these are the problems I've noticed since Sunday. This is a two-year-old, expensive computer. These things should not be happening.
  9. Since January 12, 2014, I have had almost no luck logging into SL. I was able to get in briefly twice, but usually I can't get past the white initializing screen to the log in screen, or I get an error message that "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly." I checked all the forums and tried everything they suggested I do, including several clean uninstalls and re-installs. I also spent quite a bit of money hiring a computer tech company to try and solve the problem. They and I have now put about 30 hours into trying to get me into Second Life to no avail. In addition, I have sent in a tech support request to SL, but I haven't heard back from them yet. Can anyone help me? I have been using the SL Viewer for 3 1/2 years because I am a teacher in SL dealing with a lot of newbies, and I want my screen to look like theirs to make sure the instructions I give them are easy to follow. Also, a few years ago I tried Firestorm, but it completely undid my inventory organizeation, and when you have a carefully organized inventory of 40,000 items, that's a big deal. My current problem is quite a blow professionally since now I can't get into SL to teach my students, my main source of income, and I also can't get in to moderate the 5-week MachinEVO course on making machinimas. This is scaring away the newbies we are trying to bring into SL, since if someone who is such a pro in SL can't get in, what hopes can they have? My computer is a high quality Dell work station.
  10. Hi again, Rolig! You seem to consistently have good ideas about the problems I pose. Thanks. The script you are referring to sounds like a good starting point, but would it be possible to increase the number and division of functions to include. Having one student control backward and forward movement, while the other student controls left and right movement, would certainly be fun to watch, since a lot of students have enough trouble walking even when they can control everything. So I would definitely like to try that out. However, I was really thinking in terms of forcing a different kind of student cooperation for mystery-solving and scavenger-hunting tasks. If only one student could click on objects or add photos and notes to a pair notebook, while only the other student could move the pair about, then the two students would have to discuss where to go, what to touch, and the significance of their actions and finds. I suppose I could use your initial idea with the stipulation that one student must send me a notecard listing the items the pair found, while the other student would need to send me photos of the student pair at the locations where the various clues/objects were found. But I'm trying to see how far I can I can push the envelope in terms of dividing up avatar abilities and tasks to ensure students talk to each other. A while ago I took some students to Numbakulla island when it still existed in Second Life, and I loved the place. But the Numbakulla mystery was too complicated a mystery for my students to solve during one or two classes, and the students were too prone to running everywhere on their own, rather than really working with their partners. I put a lot of work into preparing an introduction Machinima and Moodle tools for the students, (see ), but I still wasn't very happy with the results.Later I made my own murder mystery for the students and made a film of some of the students solving it (see ), but again there had to be a tremendous amount of my holding their hands to get the students to work together. The YouTube links I included above should show you that I'm not afraid of working hard to create language materials that I and other teachers can use to really take advantage of the immersive aspects of SL. So I am deeply grateful for any and all suggestions you might have.
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. I was worried about false positives. I'll play with your suggestions.
  12. This is the third wish I'm posting today for any genies or genius out there. Is there a way for SL to detect when a language other than English is being spoken and then have this trigger a buzzer or flashing lights or some other humerous response? I would like to discourage ESL students from using their first languages while in classes in SL But when I have large groups of students or groups of students where a majority of the students speak the same mother tongue, this can be difficult.
  13. I was wondering if there is a way to force students who resist working together to do so by somehow combining their avatars. Students learning a new language sometimes try to solve in-world tasks by themselves rather than with the partners you assign. That's a problem because then the students don't use the new language they are studying as much as they should. So perhaps I could create half avatars for avatar pairs to wear or alphas that mask half of any avatars the students are wearing. I would then put out a disk for both avatars to sit on that contains scripts that allow the first avatar to control only walking and flying, while the second avatar would control only touching and taking and snapshot functions. Is this do-able?
  14. Hmmm, okay, I hadn't thought about using the UUIDs. In fact, I just recently became aware of what they are. Would the deck stop dealing when one copy of each UUID had been distributed, or would it continue drawing from the same pool of UUIDs infinitely? I would want it to stop after one and only one of each card had been dealt. Unfortunately, I am as dumb as I look and would have to find or buy a dealer script somewhere. Are they for sale in the SL marketplace?
  15. It probably would be best if each player had their own place on the table to lay down cards for rummy-type games. Then if another player had an adverb or logical prepositional phrase, adjective, etc., to add to the sentence that was laid down, the original play and the additions could easily be seen. Of course, for other card games it might only be necessary to have one central place to lay down cards. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a linguistic card game I would create that would allow players to only pass. But a game hud with the choices Draw to, Play Highlighted Cards, and Pass would cover all the options I might want, as long as I made it clear to the students when I explained the games that merely passing would not be acceptable. Great questions! I've done some building and scripting in SL, but it is clearly not my forte.
