((This is a three part suggestion...Part one, Get Kinect. Part Two, Get SL on the Big Screen TV. Part 3, go 3D)) Here is an interesting video from an earlier post on Kinect in Jan 2011 Getting plugged in with kinect is when SL hits the big screen TV.... This is a needed feature to complement all the users who attend music events that dance to the music. Consider thse two scenerios: NO KINECT - Presently, one attends a LIVE music (which btw, is an awesome experience listening to someone play live and interacting with those in attendance...it really does make for an immersive live experience, unlike any 'streaming' performance from a sat TV or cable) Everyone in the room, of course since this is SL, may interact with anyone else...ok okBut....all the dancing moves are done by an AO...and yes some nice AO, but not really dancing. WITH KINETIC - First, Kinect technology is expecting the user to be in a limited space...but for dancing that IS JUST FINE. with Kinect. Don't need to move around, just dance.Of course, using specific gestures, one could then control actions such as walking, etc. without a lot of body movement, just mostly hand gestures.

[guessing here by experience] The SL viewers are not compiled for more than a single processor. At best one processor is used. Having used duals, quads and now a 2600k, only one processor is ever used by SL. As for graphic cards - having installed a 590 - again only see one processor used, so am thinking this is a basic code/compiled condition of SL. So, not sure but have not seen a boost in frame rate using SLI. If there is a trick, I would like to know it! ok

Spot on? Are you joking or just hopelessly naive? is one of the first things most employers look at when you apply for a job. If youre SL is linked in any way to your facebook an employer wont touch you. if you have a job already allot fo companies will fire you for it. especially if you have a very consienscious employer or you work for a government agency. And yes even if you have a SL facebook profile it can still get linked to your rl one too. and thats exactly what these aps are doing... @Cummere Mayo - Thank you for your reply. (I always appreciate evidence that someone read my post!) "Spot on" - yes because social networks use the email account as the link for 'common' identities. Not taking offense, I would proffer that if an employer is data-mining Facebook accounts that in and of itself is enought to make things questionable. Afterall, is all of that 'information" on the Facebook postings really acceptable? The parties? The friends? The postings? The opinions? It would seem that if one's Facebook account is being used as the same weight as a resume, then the George Orwellian world of 1984 is truly in the here and now. Hurray for those countries that are trying to catch up with the tide of Internet social networks! What one posts on a blog, etc. should be controlled by the poster, not the hosting company. At the moment, it seems that Mr Zuckerberg's attitude that anything posted on his 'free' website is his to use (it that is what is happening as some say..)....well...that will need to come to an end if the Internet is to be what we think it is...which it isn't quite right yet. ((that may need to be reread again to make sense...but it does. ok)) Since the key to most social networks is the email address....using a common email address for identity for them will most likely blend them. Different email addresses are the firewalls between blending identities. IP address - when computers can be used by more than one person - are not so reliable for making those connections. BTW - Speaking to the concern of privacy which seems to have become a branch of this original thread.....of all the browers that are readily available for use - Safari, EI, Chrome, Firefox are the ones I am thinking of - it is Firefox with the "NoScript" add-on that seems to be the most open and helpful firewall for privacy. Only speaking from personal experience, the NoScript shows all the scripts on a site that are trying to data-mine as you look at it. The brilliance of this particular program is that you can generally turn off all but the more essential scripts for looking at a site. I do not recommend this particular browser and add-on, but I would not tell anyone not to try it out either. I wouldn't want to stop anyone from having a postitive experience. ok

Second Life was, is and perhaps will always be a work in progress. If I remember correctly, it did not start out with residents doing all the major building, but very early on it was recognized by LL that the residents were, could and did create the major content of Second Life. Yes, because of when it started, newer worlds may be using more recent technology, but it seems that LL is making attempts to upgrade and make it even more scalable. Bugs in software are always annoying, no matter what program they are in. But I have to say that from my limited experience here....the system-wide outages (like living in a country with only one power generator) seem to be pretty much a thing of the past. Gone are the 'rebooting the entire grid' message mostly it seems. Any new software change is a very big deal. Thousands of companies were not able to make the change and upgrade back long ago when Microsoft changed from their DOS based system to their Windows system. It does take time to redo technology especially as it evolves. Gone now on most modern printers are the parallel port...the de rigueur if only a few years ago. Things do change..... Compare Windows 7 to Windows 95.....that seems like more than just the century difference each was made in. Viewer 2 is different...but it is barely one year old. I would say that LL has listened to its residents in making great strides in its usability (from making buttons optional, to the tear-off tabs) and I for one look forward to more. (Especially more of the camera control, DOF and other really charming goodies.) The fact that the very basis, still, of Second Life, is that it is a resident created environment is the most exciting. Yes, there are DMC issues, but that is true for all of the Internet. The entire Internet is still in its infancy stages. Overall, I think LL has learned to crawl with Second Life. Like I said, I believe it is a "work in progress" and I look forward to the new tools (mesh?, DOF, etc.) that may be coming. I look forward to the time someone gets an 'Oscar' for their film done in Second Life, to when most musicians will be synced to Second Life as they play their RL venues (only in Second Life they may be playing in more exotic locals...) and use inputs like "Kinect" to mirror their RL actions into SL so the two are REALLY synced!;... and it is used also as a way for those in RL to visit virtual mirrors in Second Life of those in RL (I am thinking virtual museums, etc, here.) View 2.5 Beta release shows an attempt by LL to improve Second Life. That is good. However....I, for one....and waiting and getting prepared for the really really view upgrade...Viewer 3.xxx. With 120hz monitor, am ready, willing and able, except for the viewer, to see Second Life in the way it was meant to be seen...in 3D! Ok! Oh!!! PS - As I read over the many comments in the blogs regarding LL, I always wonder how much would be making the same type of comments if instead of having the name Linden Lab, they had the name Greystone Industies? And where and what Second Life would be then.....am not sure if eveyone would display the same attitudes if the TOS were the same as V-World..... Ooooh!! PPS - Since this is written on what in U.S. is called "Super Bowl Sunday" - am wondering how soon it will be when all the players have little trans-emitters woven in their clothing, are tracked by that "kinect-like" device and are also playing inworld. If one can make one virtual stadium...one could make a thousand, or ten thousand....so I can't see a limit on who could watch that game as an immersive event....Oh? not to mention the World Soccer Cup too!! All while using Viewer 3.xx...hmmmmm. ok

Profile Notes are one of the most important ways to keep track of the hundreds of people I have met in Second Life. It smooths the awkwardness of needing to ask someone who the heck they are when they contact you out of the blue months later. It's a good place to jot down email addresses and phone numbers, or the last time you talked to an avatar that has been sitting unused at the bottom of your Friends list for months. - Nany Kayo Agreed, yes, spot on!

@Kat - My vote too on having an option - or both: Open in Side bar Open in a Browser window (with of course the option to open using the Viewer browser, or ones own web browser) Open in Side bar with a button to then open in browser too.

@Darien - You have definitely found situation where hiding one's profile from search creates an unintended problem. I am not so sure that the term "stupid" is the appropriate way to describe this set of circumstances. I suspect the reason LL provided residents the option to hide from search is to maintain a level of privacy. Actually, in RL, this type of situation also happens quite easily, as when one maintains a high privacy setting on a web site for a credit relationship....when trying to talk to a representative, they cannot help because the privacy setting prevents the company's own employees from looking at the personal information. That is, not until one resets their privacy setting, or discloses some personal security key so that the employee can then help. In SL, you seem to have uncovered a situation where one's selection to be private prevents a business owner like yourself from helping your customer. I would suspect that neither the customer, you or LL intended for you not to be able to help the customer. Like I said, I think you have discovered the unintended consequence of a privacy setting. I suspect the code writers of the privacy settings did not foresee that particular situation. Now that it is discovered, it probably something to be fixed. Perhaps a Jira on this might be appropriate to file. As a small merchant, the discovery of such a potential problem is appreciated. ok.

Looking good....hmmm....now the toga is a few thousand years old, and the log cabin a bit more recent. Am waiting for the day for a time when the head turns! Ok...looking forward to a good 2011. Nice post of your explorations. Now if only making a guess...you may have about 14,800 more prims to use on that sim! ok Since it seems you are starting out with NO experience in SL...will be interesting on how your experience guides the ship... (sorta on/off topic here....) Regarding Version 2.5.0 and the Second Life Viewer numbering policy - http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Version_numbering According to the policy...the "5" of version 2.5 seems proper since it is a "minor" revision. However, I make an observation that according to the progress being made, there are only about 5 more of thse "minor" revsions until you run into version 3.xxx? I would think...that that version..."3.xxx" would be better for when the viewer has 3D capabilities..... Maybe the version should be called 2.005.0 <- that way one can get the sense there are a few more versions available until the limit of version 2.x is reached. ok

"My Profile" <side bar item> Well, this is definitely a beta version......now...the Side Menu has a tab with a Person silhouette for looking at My Profile...but when that tab is selected...the Side Menu slides out..and except for ones pic....no information except a button that says "Profile." Hmmmmm...thought I just clicked a tab to see My Profile. Ok...click the button and a screen filling web page opens up. The logic is getting a bit confusing.... My guess is the folks working to make the web pages work, were never quite comfortable with the side bar thingy, so basically the Side Bar tab is dissed <and dismissed> and just becomes an extra - not quite why do I have to do this...thing - step. Ok - maybe a suggestion here..pick a lunch date, order some pizza or other fav food and get both teams together, state what you like, what you did, and how you see your particular take working......go around the room, everyone gets about 4 mins at first, then a second round of 2 mins, - btw - someone takes notes on a white board - then open to comments...be sure to assign a moderator - and end this TWO HOUR session with a coherent goal and steps to get there. ok - if you need a facilitator for this, let me know, i think i could find the time...provided there is a nice green salad with greek olives and cheese. ok

@Cybin - Ahhh...good point...the Jira software just needs porting... Agreed on inventory dropping (such as Notecards - a really really important way to communicate to bypass the limitatins of IMs..)

"Logging in to your Favorite Locations" - very nice. I see that there is mention when selecting this option that 'anyone on this computer may see these'. Suggestion - make these available on a separate page AFTER the Login is selected...that way the resident name and password has been verified, and the resident then gets to select where to end up. This 'extra' page would not be hard to do, would only be available to those who chose to have this option keep these selections private. ok - done!
