I just encountered an interesting experience @ The Wisdom Circle in SL today where a poem was shared, discussing 'resilience'. We all encounter difficult experiences in SL -- what helps you cope and develop resilience? Do you recognize patterns in the poem that relate to how you manage difficult situations in SL, and/or do you have coping strategies of your own to share? Remember to stick to coping with difficulties in SL only. I understand the following: Warning: Please use this reasonably: if you abandon and choose a new Linden Home five times in 24 hours, you are temporarily blocked from choosing another. You will need to wait 24 hours before registering again. However, when I select and check it out a new home alternative to find it is NOT what I am looking for...then abandon and choose another - it brings me back to the same choice over and over. This means you get ONE not 5 choices in a 24 hour period...right? Or am I doing something wrong?

There are l good points made in this interview, but I don't think a racial bias is the only problem with glorifying resilience. Now, first of all, resilence is absolutely necessary for survival. However, being able to remove oneself from a harmful situation is better than just being able to absorb and survive harm. When a child is abused, they may not be able to remove themself from a harmful situation, so they have to develop resilience (and coping mechanisms) in order to survive. A victim of domestic abuse or slavery (and I don't mean just historically) may not be able to escape their abuse either, so they also have to develop resilience in order to survive. People develop all kinds of coping mechanisms in order to survive physical and mental abuse. These help them to survive initially, but may be less than ideal when that person is no longer in the original abusive situation. Take disassociation as an example. Being able to take one's mind away from reality helps a person to survive during the abuse, but if disassociation is later triggered in situations that are not physically harmful, the person may have difficultly interacting with others or might even experience mental blackouts in their daily life. I think we probably want to focus on *healthy* coping mechanisms for this thread, such as listening to music, talking with supportive people, journaling, play, exercise, or artistic creation. Many of these activities can be part of a rewarding and healthy use of Second Life. If being in Second Life feels like existing in a stressful or toxic environment, however, then removing oneself from it for a while might be the best solution, rather than enduring stressful or toxic situations in a virtual world. Btw, I prefer using the term "coping mechanisms" rather than "resilience", because resilience seems to me to imply some kind of moral superiority.

Like with any situation we're in (be it a place, person, or group) there can come a time when it's no longer right for us, when it no longer enhances our life. That's when it's time to move on to something that does, and that's actually a characteristic of being resilient (knowing, having the awareness, of when something doesn't suit us anymore, and leaping out in faith to find what does). From what you've described it sounds like it's time for you to move on. But I don't see the reason being that you've become "too resilient" here, rather that you are simply seeking positive meaning for your life in a place that isn't suited for you anymore.

I need to move on....stuffs to do...and I've said all I can say. If it can't be comprehended (by many anyway) that it's good to overcome challenges in any world, to honor ourselves when we manage to do so, I don't know what else I can say....

To me, the insult of the definition I quoted is where it emphasis returning to pre-crisis status "quickly". We don't measure some kind of healing in "time". To me, if the original research on "resilience" focused on "getting better fast", that smacks of "get the workers back on the job", etc. People heal when they heal. Sometimes you don't completely heal. That's OK - more than OK. It is part of being human.

And that poem catalyzed this dilemma we're discussing....this bifurcation when we consider 'strength'...which is...what does 'strong' actually mean in our world? What does 'coping' with life actually mean? And most important, how does SL play into it...does SL help us sort it all out via its many activities and experiences?

It's something I definitely didn't want to touch in this thread given the places that discussion could go, so instead, I just focused on stress/stress relief in SL in general, but yes. Resilience is not quite a positive thing in my world, for the reasons laid out in those comics. It's definitely stopped me from receiving help in the past when I've wanted it, due to being told by a strong, independent parent that nothing could be soooo bad surely I'd be fiiiiiiine and would be able to handle anyyyyything on my owwwn (ironic, since she herself was a counselor in a field I wasn't personally struggling with, but still - you'd think she'd recognize a cry for help in general, lol). I eventually did manage to get over my normal teen social troubles (wasn't anything serious and fairly routine for that age, but I'm a sensitive sort with general anxiety about everything, so of course I made things out to be worse than they were), but I do regret having to struggle through it on my own when things could've been made slightly easier with a good counselor or someone to talk to. I don't strive to build resilience in Second Life. Why would I? It's a place I go to chill and be around friends I can actually talk to and share advice with. Truthfully, I don't want a whole lot of it in any life. A little is fine, which I already have, but I'm good admitting I can't conquer the world by myself.

One of the attributes of resilience is to have awareness when a situation of abuse arrives, as well as the ability to get to safety. Resilience does not mean being able to absorb and survive harm. Do you see why I switched to "what makes you FEEL GOOD in SL" instead of calling it 'resilience'. The word is too complicated, but then 'feel good' became an issue and people had to bring in 'addiction'. Sigh

I've been using Maitreya for a long, long time - from back when it was still the best mesh body option. I'm starting to notice less and less creators making clothing for Maitreya and switching over to Legacy Reborn. I'll be honest, I'm out of the loop as I have not gone clothes shopping in quite a while. I went to an event and saw probably 50% of the clothing vendors only offering one size for Legacy Reborn. Kinda surprised me. I like very thin looking avatars. Maitreya has always leaned towards a curvier build, but I made it work as best as I could, although my arms stick out like noodles and I've just accepted it. I know nothing about Legacy Reborn's body type possibilities. For those that made the switch - was it worth it? Is Legacy Reborn going to take over completely? I have so many clothes for Maitreya I dread rebuilding a wardrobe, but perhaps if this is the future of SL bodies it's a necessary thing I have to do T__T Just wanna hear from others before I consider investing into the body

Where did you get the idea that being resilient means you "take all the crap life throws at you with a smile on their face and a sunny disposition"? It does not mean that at all. It means we go through the process we need to go through when faced with adversity and move on to where we can deal with life again. We eventually overcome, through facing our pain, and learn to live again.

I won't buy hair that goes over the bosom for pretty much this reason. There's just no way the hair maker can predict the right spot to put things for the vast range of shapes out there. It happens with hair over the back as well, but not as often. When it comes to props rezzed by furniture - PLEASE let me rez ad mod it, then put it back into the furniture. A lot of furniture brands now put anti-rez scripts or no mod on that stuff. I don't want a coffee cup, book, cutting board, etc that's bigger than my entire avatar. But that's tangenting off thread. That complaint belongs in the other current thread about mod perms.

Well that article is just silly. Nobody runs around with a flag labeled 'resilient' and thinks everyone has to constantly be strong. That would be some societal meme and honestly I don't see that everywhere except with macho men who claim to be super tough. Being resilient doesn't mean you can't express pain. Total distortion of the concept. In fact, the ability to feel your emotions and deal with them is a sign of resilience. I love it if a friend notices I went through a difficult time and tells me I really dealt well with that! I think it depends on the context as to whether I'd like someone telling me I'm resilient though. The person matters...how close I am to them...whether I'm okay with them noticing my inner life. I'm not criticizing anyone who wants to choose whether they accept another using that name when speaking to them though -- I'm criticizing the author of that article and how she distorts. I like this song of empowerment for women titled 'Resilience.'..we sometimes play it for inspiration at my Heart Menders meeting where we deal with the loss of loved ones. We make a point of overcoming adversity because if you don't deal with pain it affects the quality of your life in very bad ways, and part of that process is crying on each others shoulder.

I forget exactly. WIllowdale parcels are outstanding... beautifully landscaped with quality trees, plants, water features, birds, but with plenty of room (and LI) to add your home and your own landscaping and deco. Personally, I have never seen an estate where parcels are prepared this way. It must take considerable time and expense, and makes them welcoming even before you settle in. Tenants also get access to several fun areas, such as a racetrack and a glorious beach. But more importantly, the estate owner, Imagin Illyar, is very kind, and VERY prompt to help with any issues which might arise (for example, a region needed a restart due to some SL quirk). I have frequently recommended Willowdale to friends, for the reasons given above. Given what all you get, rents are very low. The rules are logical, common sense ones, clearly showing an understanding of how SL works - unlike others I have seen. Many rules are geared to peaceful coexistence with other tenants on the same region, such as restricting sounds to your own parcel, and keeping sky builds out of view of preexisting builds. In summary, I cannot recommend Willowdale enough. I found out that she owns and runs her sims all on her own, yet her service is top notch and she responds much faster than a lot of rental places that have people working for them. Goes to show that it's not always how big your name is in SL that makes a good service. After contacting her, I went ahead and rented a plot, it wasn't what I had in mind, because I wanted a corner at the time but was determinded to make Willowdale our home. I had asked that she let me know when she might have a corner up for rent and sure enough, good on her word, she did. So....another move was in store, but we didn't mind because we found our "forever" home with the best service possible! On the money side of things, Willowdale seems to be one of the few estates who offer 10% discount when you pay 4 weeks. This really comes in useful when paying a months tier. It is also a quite private place to live with absolutely no annoyance from neighbors. No complains and Imagin is always ready with advice about how to get the best out of your investment. I forget exactly. WIllowdale parcels are outstanding... beautifully landscaped with quality trees, plants, water features, birds, but with plenty of room (and LI) to add your home and your own landscaping and deco. Personally, I have never seen an estate where parcels are prepared this way. It must take considerable time and expense, and makes them welcoming even before you settle in. Tenants also get access to several fun areas, such as a racetrack and a glorious beach. But more importantly, the estate owner, Imagin Illyar, is very kind, and VERY prompt to help with any issues which might arise (for example, a region needed a restart due to some SL quirk). I have frequently recommended Willowdale to friends, for the reasons given above. Given what all you get, rents are very low. The rules are logical, common sense ones, clearly showing an understanding of how SL works - unlike others I have seen. Many rules are geared to peaceful coexistence with other tenants on the same region, such as restricting sounds to your own parcel, and keeping sky builds out of view of preexisting builds. In summary, I cannot recommend Willowdale enough. My brain hurts from reading the entirety of this thread. It is a pain that was obviously self inflicted since I had the choice to read or not. So I have learned that perhaps I shouldn't of continued to read through a topic that was made confusing the more it was discussed. Like things that have happened in my sl over the years that were negative experiences for me. There haven't been many in sl thankfully, but I have made a point to learn from each experience things I could actively do differently to avoid those types of experiences from happening again. I can't control other people's actions, but I can control my own. I take responsiblity for my actions because again, the only person I have control over is myself. I learned to put up personal boundaries for self care. My family and friends know those boundaries and I know theirs. We all make the agreement to respect said boundaries for all of our own sanity. That is why the family and friend group I have in sl was established years ago and has lasted to the present day. My rl has been complicated and difficult enough so I do everything in my power to make sure my sl is a mini holiday for me when I login. I don''t have any special techniques or exercises. Just learning from past experiences I've had. I simply call that common sense though. Not resilience.

Hello. I'm looking for a little help from someone who knows even a little more about scripting than I do...hopefully someone familiar avsitter, or possibly black tulip moving parts...and that can explain what I need to do in non-scriptor terms...lol. In a nutshell, I'd like to get the avsitter "move prim by pose" script to respond to a BUTTON in the avpos card, either instead of OR in addition to a POSE or SYNC. The full details are these: I have an item with a door. I'd like the door to open and close by touch with a simple door script when no one is sitting (simple enough). However, I'd also like a sitter to have the ability to open, close or slightly open the door regardless of the pose/sync they're in (hence the BUTTON). Finally, I'd like to use the script as intended and have the door in certain positions based the given pose or sync. Both latter options would be great, but just the BUTTON method would be wonderful too. I've tried messing with send/receive link messages a little, but clearly haven't found the right combination. I'm familiar with the Black Tulip Moving Parts script as well, and may or may not use it in this project depending on the results I get here...so if someone knows a better way with the BT scripts to accomplish what I'm looking for, I'd be perfectly happy with that as well. My first earnest forays into socializing within SL began around 2012, when I sought out and maintained more friendships. But it was about more than simply socializing for me. It was also very much about discoveries I made about myself, and the self exploration that followed. I form attachments easily, and with them, emotional connections that I've had to manage. In seeking out, or simply being open to relationships, I suppose it could be called resilience that I can endure some of the disappointments that are inevitably a part of this process. The how of it lies in reminding myself that I put myself into these situations, whether delight, or difficulty, and by also reminding myself that new happiness so often comes after pain.

Hello good afternoon! I'm building a NEXT UP system for my store but I have some doubts. The system fits into the new rules of the old "gacha", but I would like to do something more and I came across something in the TOS that confused me, here's the excerpt: Can I sell an item, and also then include an unknown random item attached as a bonus? For example, like a buy one, get one free (BOGO), but the free item is the random/unknown item. No, this is not permitted. My contact is due to this question, as I would like to include in my system a BONUS that each customer will be entitled to when purchasing a certain number of times. The idea is not to sell an already known item along with a random one, but when the person reaches the necessary level to earn the bonus they will receive a random item. Is this allowed? I paid the premium to contact live support chat and resolve this issue, but the answer I got was that they cannot help me with this and that I should find out more here on the forum. They themselves don't understand the policy they create!

Not redefining it but pointing out that there is a potential for a dark side to it also. Depends entirely on the motivation. To someone who is a creator, resilience is a good thing to deal with the vagaries of a changing platform if they wish to continue creating for it but to someone like my self who is not much more then consuming avatar it leads to questioning myself why I continue beating on this platform to understand and live within it when there are easier ones out there. Most gaming platforms try to make it easier, not steepen the learning curve to such a point that even a 15 year veteran is throwing their hands up in confusion. There are plenty of other virtual worlds out there where the degree of resilience is not needed to be able to interact within it. Is it possible that those of us here who continue to rely on the resilience to continue on with SL have not crossed the line from a healthy resilience to becoming obsessive about it?
