Generally whwnit comes to mesh clothing on meah bodies you want fitted mesh clothing rigged specifically to that body. Sometimes regular mesh will work if you use the right alpha layers that come with the body. It can be hard to find fitted mesh though for all but the very most popular bodies

Do you wear a mesh starter avatar?

If that is the case you are out of luck. LL has been warned again and again that the mesh avatars will cause more harm than good, because they are simply not possible to customize. http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2014/05/second-lifes-new-mesh-avatars.html

Linden Lab refuse to update the avatars so they both look better and is customizable. That's why there is a growing number of mesh avatars made by Second Life residents. They are very well made, but they are also different. Some designers make them close to the default avatar in size so it can be more easy to use clothes for it. Some make them more different. Clothes for one brand does not fit another brand.... it is confusing.

This is why we ask what kind of avatar you use. When shopping on the marketplace, you have to shop by mesh avatars or classic avatars category.

This will only work with the Niramyth avatar as advertised: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/AESTHETIC-FatPack-LB-Swear-Classic-Mens-T-Shirt-wHUD-Fitted-Mesh-Clothing-for-Aesthetic-Mesh-Body-ONLY/7345925

This will work for classic and mesh avatars - but it is not tested on the Niramyth avatar, only on the TMP avatar. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Bro-Collection-Casual-Cotton-Tee-HUD-GIFT/6872047

This avatar looks good, but if you search for clothes you will find that there is no other clothing made for him than what's in the pack https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/BRODERICK-MESH-AVATAR-BY-TELLAQ/6083589

Ok, so now you are ready to pack up and leave SL for good? Fear not. It is not necessary to have a mesh avatar. Go for a classic one equipped with a good skin and a nice mesh wardrobe. But beware, always try a demo first even if it is tiresome. You can always skip demos when you become more confident and you have built up a number of brands that fit you well.

First you must choose another avatar. Go to the icon that shows two figures and pick a classic avatar. Then read this blogpost: From Zero to Hero: http://canarybeck.com/2015/03/30/the-2-hour-mens-second-life-makeover-style-guide/

I don't have much to add, because all she suggests is also some of my favourite items for males. If you think this is too hard for your budget, I will still advice you to change to a classic avatar.  Try on demos and come back here, tell us your budget and ask for advice. It is cheaper ways to look great, and I know many of them!

Please, for your own sanity, take that horrible thing off. You'll not find anything that will fit it or that you can use with it. Start with the default body and work with that. Once you get some Lindens, you can upgrade to a real body like Story Leaf, Signature, Niramythe Aesthetic or Immortals, all of which are compatibly with Omega appliers.

The starter mesh body is a fail on so many levels, just ditch it.

Definitely read and take notes from Canary Beck's blog post about how to quickly update your male avatar to look awesome. If you can't afford or don't want to spend much money on your new avatar (which is a reasonable choice), here are some other suggestions:

Look on Marketplace for a "Complete Male Avatar". Filter your search from Best Rated and from Lowest priced, to see what looks good and is a good value. Here are some examples:

This store has a bunch of $L 10 avatars that don't look too bad:

Here's one, not quite a complete avatar, but still a good value option:

One of the better free male "attachments" (tint it to match your skin):

Thanks for the suggestions, you guys. I like the old avatars, because I can easily create custom clothing for them. I might also buy one of the mesh avatars that Persephone Emerald suggested and see what clothes would fit it.

If you feel very brave or have someone with you who knows their way around The Shops for The Mesh Project, you might want to try one of their free wearable mesh demo bodies. You have to wear their Shopping hud to buy even the freebies. Their free mesh bodies have very limited functions. Their deluxe bodies are also expensive and not compatible with the Omega applier system or many regular mesh clothes.

However, if you want to see what it's like to have a fitted mesh body, their free version is good. The female one comes with a short dress & high heels, colorable in a few colors. The male one comes with boxer shorts, but no shoes or outerwear, so it's basically only good for naked activities. ;-)

I hope Slink and Belliza will come out with male mesh bodies in time for Christmas, but we don't really know who when the next male mesh body will come out or who will make it.
