I just happened to drop by Tuty's today, and noticed they have full avis for L$2000: shape with multiple versions of skin, hair and eyes. They even include an outfit & shoes.

Or course you'd get more individuality by hunting around and mixing & matching for yourself. Getting make-up tattoos is an option to refresh an old skin too, as you can get some very reasonable make-up packs. For example: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/56399

JStyle has male and female skins -- many, many of them -- between L$0 (group gifts [the group is free to join]) and L$80, and they are very good. I got my skin from there (you can see it in my badge) and, from what I could see, the female skins are all excellent also. They rotate the skins so there are different free skins every other day - so basically all the skins are free at some point or another. The skins come with modifiable shapes.

Pick up some of the currently-free skins and shapes there, and try them on; you might get several that you like. And if you do not like them, you can just delete them -- and you will not have wasted any L$.

Here is the slurl to their (current) store location: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Liberation/28/250/3804

Suggestions would depend on what kind of looks you are going for. Classy lady? Goth girl? Cute anime gal? Invisible pony rider with frowny face?

I have usually gone with the usual regular girl. I like good quailty skins and always try to find some good high quality skins for the more "realistic" look.

The invisible pony rider does sound tempting though...

OOh I love the eyeshadow. I will be trying those out. soon.

What is with this "mesh" stuff I have been hearing about?

Mesh is just the keyword to describe stuff that has been created outworld and imported into Second Life, like clothing, eyes, shoes, hair, etc. The difference is is that creators with high computer graphic skills can make us really high quality items, but, since it is new and the latest buzz word, you have to avoid the copy catters and the poor quality meshes.

Emilyaya, here's one example of some high quality things possible with mesh:

There are also high quality mesh clothing items in SL (not so good ones too).  Therefore be careful, before buying mesh clothes always try first a demo to see does it fit nicely on your avatar.  If it does and pleases you then buy.

what a perfect time for this question. If you are going for female, the Womenstuff fashion group has a hunt going on right now. There are at least 5 different skins and several different avis available. some of the skins are hunt exclusives. It's 50L to join the group, but you'll get an entire makeover and wardrobe for that, 200 stores in the group. And come Dec 2, most of the stores will be putting out a second gift, so a total of 400 gifts of skin, avis, clothes, jewelry, hair, everything you need to make your avi fresh and you get to see a lot of what SL designers are offering. No, I'm not affiliated with Womenstuff. I have taken several of my alts through to freshen them up though.

Filthy, Al Vulo, Belleza...those offer cheap or free group skins. There are now many more. Check FabFree for updates.

Shapes are a matter of personal taste. Skins are easier to try and see. So it's hard to advise you on a shape. You might find a skin you love instead, and then tweak your own shape to fit it.

There are a lot of cheap or free high quality avatar accessories now. Was not the case when I first joined. So, have fun.
