#1) What do you think is the percentage of people who have graduated to using mesh products, versus the percentage of people who are still using standard products?

#2) Looking into the future which one do you think will prevail?

#3) Which are you using now (for people who use one)? Which are you using more now (for people who use both)?

Mesh? Standard?

I'll go first. I'm still using standard products only.

I use both system clothes and mesh.  The change has been slow.  I am about half and half now on the use of them, but I am no longer buying system clothes.  When I shop now, I buy mesh clothes.  I have plenty of the old style that I like a great deal and wear often.

If you are talking about bodies, I still use the standard avatar - sometimes with mesh hands or feet.  I have a mesh body, but I never seem to put it on.  I've never seen a mesh head I like enough to buy it, but if I find one I like, I will probably get it.

I have a mixture of both mesh and system clothes, and still buy both types of clothing.

I have not made the jump yet to a mesh body, but I do sometimes wear SLink feet or hands.   I like the body and skin I have now, so have not really felt the need to move to a mesh body and having to deal with more appliers and having to be more careful about knowing whether or not specific clothng will work well with the mesh body.

Mostly a mesh body with a standard head. Clothes are a mix of applier outfits and mesh (or occasionally, prim or sculpt).

Most mesh clothing is designed to fit on a standard body, so the differences in proportions and rigging make it impossible to get a good fit on many items. Even for those that do fit closely, a lack of detail in the mesh alpha HUD can make some items unwearable. It has vastly limited the range of outfits I can use, both new and existing inventory, so I sometimes go back to a standard body. When I do, the relatively poor design of the standard body doesn't matter, because so much of it is covered by the mesh clothes.

Of the people I see regularly, only a few have switched to mesh bodies. Most use the standard body, often augmented with mesh parts (usually boobs and/or feet). One person I know has been using the Avatar 2.0 (rigged, but not fitted mesh head and body) ever since it appeared. Depending on where I am, I often see a lot of Kemono avs, too.

There are other specialist rigged mesh avs that aren't really part of this debate, because the clothing issues are irrelevant to them. Things like animals, furries and one-piece 'dressed' avatars (sometimes ripped from games).

In the absence of an effective standard for mesh bodies, I think the standard avatar will remain popular. Among people I know, only 5-10% use a mesh body as their default avatar.

I am never without mesh of some form on my body. Even on the 5% of occasions I am not wearing a mesh avatar I will have mesh feet (gos), shoes and hair. - low lag for sailing or racing. Furniture, landscaping, plants and houses again all mesh. The only prims I think I am likely to use are for platforms (often megaprims) or for making into mesh.

Now, I almost always wear a Maitreya Lara mesh body and buy almost no clothing that not fitted mesh designed for this body or regular rigged or unrigged mesh that happens to fit it well. I prefer fitted mesh underwear, but will buy applier underwear, since fitted mesh that actually works with clothing is very hard to find (So far, I have one pair of fitted mesh panties that works under most skirts and dresses.).  I make an exception for mesh clothing that has both long sleeves and long legs, such as BDUs and flight suits, since there's no reason for it to fit the mesh body well.  I still usually wear flexi hair, as I think it looks better than most mesh hair.

I am in the process of going through my inventory identifying the mesh, and occasional sculpty and prim item (mostly shoes and accessories that are carried, jewelery, and hats), that work with my body and deleting the rest.  So far, I've deleted about 10,000 items.

One thing I don't understand is why no one is selling a device that can turn system layer clothing into appliers.  I'll probably end up deleting pretty system layer lingerie because I can't use it.  I'd love to make appliers from it.  Under U.S. copyright law, a consumer has unlimited rights to modify the copy of a copyrighted work that she bought and, even, to sell it after modifying it.  It seems to me that, since the viewer knows what it needs to know to render a clothing layer, it must know what it needs to know to make an applier.  The user of such a device would simply be removing a part of the article she bought, the clothing layer itself, keeping the remainder, the texture, and adding it to an applier.  It would be the equivalent of removing the cover that came on a book and replacing it with one you liked better.

For the foreseeable future, I will continue to prefer prim buildings, because I want to be able to modify them.

You can't legally change the system clothes you have into appliers because the original texure/template is owned by the creator. To convert without their permission could be constured as a DMCA violation though as long as it's just for personal use, probably wouldn't be pursued.

As for what will prevail...Probably a mixture. Depends on the look you want. That's the wonderful thing about SL, you can look the way you want. I use one of 3 mesh bodies all the time. Which one depends on what mesh clothing I'm wearing because the alpha cuts on the huds for the bods are different for each one. I choose the one that has the best alphas for what I want to wear.

I also make applier-based/system clothing, sometimes with mesh/sculpt additions such as cuffs and sleeves. A system shirt under mesh pants/skirt and a mesh jacket can look sharp and eliminate the problem of cutting from the system shirt. Again, depends on the look you want to achieve.

Mesh? Standard?

I'll go first. I'm still using standard products only.

1 - I haven't a clue.  Using the wild guess meter and proven statistics I just made up ... 7% use full mesh bodies.

2 - My never fail future predictor (a.k.a Magic 8 Ball) says ... ask gain later.  Personally I think both will prevail.

3 - Mesh body with system head.  I still have some other collector type avatars and costumes that use prim and system parts but those are worn rarely if ever.

Yes, the
original
texture may be owned by her, but she sold me a copy, and it's my right to do with that copy as I please.

"To convert without their permission could be constured as a DMCA violation though as long as it's just for personal use, probably wouldn't be pursued."

It could also be construed as not a DMCA violation.  I bought a system layer garment; I took away the system layer; I added the texture that remained to an applier.  I did not copy anything; I just deleted a part of what I bought and added the remainder to something.  I am within my rights to alter a copyrighted item that I bought, e.g., I can tear pages out of a book, write in the margins, black out passages, add the remaining pages to pages from another copyrighted book, have them bound together into one volume, and then sell it

What percent use mesh products? No clue. Of the active users, meaning people who login in daily, I think the percent that use mesh is high...i will wild guess 70% have some mesh. As for what percent use mesh bodies...far lower.

Define prevail...if you want to know if people will always make ssystem clothes...yes. I think aas a percentage of sales though system clothes will decline. IMHO the peple spending real money in SL are buying mesh.

I am nearly 100% mesh all the time, with the exception of my head. I do wear a fair amount of appleir clothing which I suppose is closer to traditional, but my purchases are still predominantly mesh.

When I have loose hair it's mesh, my shoes are mesh and some of my clothes - skirts and dresses in particular.

I don't see the point in mesh for tight-fitting clothes and I'm happy with my 'system' shape as I'm quite slim and athletic.

I know that mesh has better detailing in some areas and smoother joint articulation, so it's rather surprising that so many mesh bodies are odd shaped!

The answer, eventually, at least as far as the current SL is concerned, is for some improvements to the existing system avatar, with more polygons - if that can be done withouut upsetting the underlying shape or and the way skins and system clothing fit.
