How do i block messages coming in?

Messages coming from objects or avatars can be blocked by blocking that object or avatar.

You can also disable chat popups, so that whenever you get a message it doesn't appear on your screen.

You can also set to only allow your friends or groups to IM you.

ps, you can also set your self to busy mode:

A state in which your avatar does not hear nearby chat, other Residents' IMs receive the "busy mode" response, and you automatically refuse all inventory and teleport offers. Choose Me > My Status > Busy to set busy mode.
