[VIDEO] How to make your sky look winter-esque in seconds

Even if your real-world home is in a land of palm trees, you can still enjoy winter responsibly in Second Life! With US Thanksgiving a few days away, winter is upon us and I've been visiting all the Winter Activities in the Destination Guide. Have a cool (hehe) place? Submit it! My wife Ravenelle and I have also been shopping at the Marketplace, because what says "Happy Holidays!" better than being a good consumer, right?

If Second Life's sky and water still look too — well, warm — for your snowbound tastes, you can achieve a winter look in seconds. I've touched upon similar things in years past, but for the current Viewer 2.3 UI, you oughta see how easy it is in this video.

Basically,

  1. Select World menu > Sun > Environment Editor.
  2. Click Advanced Sky button.
  3. Select Foggy from Sky Presets dropdown menu.
  4. Click LIGHTING tab.
  5. Increase Ambient sliders to taste... you can have a warmer or colder sky this way, or overall brighter as I do here with all set to 0.22.

Many more WindLight/sky/atmospheric settings are here for your downloading pleasure.

And oh, the sled in the video can be acquired here — it was such a Matrix-esque moment of "We need guns!" except, we needed sleds, and Naxos Loon and Lita Withnail came to join us. The spontaneous rush can't be beat. Here we are all "AHHHH AIR!!!!"

The reindeer are coming out too, red noses and all.

I'm intensely exploring Second Life and you can visit Here island (my home) and you can watch my adventures. Who knows when you might bump into me? Don't forget to ask for my bear.

Now go take some pictures and video and be hawt... in the cold.

Yes, very winter-like.  I begin adding Christmas lights to my many many eves and gutters later today...  Well, perhaps tomorrow...4470620908_36f052bb65_z.jpg

Thanks Torley for helping us create a Winter Wonderland! Great video as always!

Please, please, PLEASE make sky and water settings estate definable so that we can set our own sims the way we'd like others to see them.  It's silly to have to tel people to set value 1 to this and value 60 to that just to get the specific look that the sim was decorated for.

Some third party viewers and OSgrids have had this ability for some time now, why is LL lagging behind so much even though putting estate controls was part of the original promise of the whole windlight project?

Huh... it still hasn't snowed here. Oh well, nothing wrong with adding a little white to my rezzable home lol. Thanks for the video Torley, you gave me some good ideas

Nice idea about stopping wave motion to make it look more like ice. I bet uploading a custom ice map texture would help it some, too.

But... add me to the list of people BEGGING for estate side windlight presets, Pllleeeeaaase! :C

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling,
Ring ting tingling too
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you
Outside the snow is falling
And friends are calling "yoo hoo",
Come on, it's lovely weather
For a sleigh ride together with you.
Giddy yap, giddy yap, giddy yap...

First snow out here.
So, to stay in theme, my castle is now also covered with snow. Lucky I have a nice fireplace to keep me warm, and many good friends so I won't get cold.

If you go from Clementia South East, it's the only castle with snow on top.

I used the FOGGY preset for a horror roleplaying story I did in Steelhead but found it too bright for night scenes - it took some playing about but the ambient light sliders were the key. Cheers for this guide and I'd love some more advice on how to use the sky & water settings to make scenes come alive for different weather and times of day

"When are we going to have estate-side sky and water settings?" is one of those BIG OPEN QUESTIONS I still haven't heard any word on, since it's not a high enough company priority (and has been shuffled amidst other projects several times), but I'd eventually love to say "IT'S HERE"... and hopefully it won't be by the time we all look like that guy who took a sip of the false grail in Indiana Jones. I know some of you have been expecting it since, well, 2007, and I keep checking.

@Ferd I love that those 3rd-party viewers included mine and some cool ones by Resis I use regularly. The list gets pretty long with 100s tho, so I wish we had preset sorting "folder" categories like some of my fave audio plugins have. AHHH, WISHES.

I'm told Estate Windlight (Not Parcel) is in the Server Code placed by Tiggs Linden, and that the SnowStorm Viewer is slated to put the code in. Once this is tested, then to Viewer 2.

Tiggs said it is 'estate only'. Given

I'm not sure I'd care to have every 512 lot I cross dink with my Windlight settings. But it would be very happy for Estates to have control. We'll see how the user market ends up choosing between them. I didn't find anything public in Snowstorm about where Estate Windlight falls into the queue.

I'm following https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7677? and I told Tiggs Linden they really ought to do some follow up there.
