why does my viewer say server not found?

when i pull up sl my screen say server not found.... what do i do?

when i go to my start page for vewier 2 it say sever host not found. then when i go in to the game and try to look at ppl's profile it say host not found.

If it is saying DNS host not found & you are using a Mac, there is a JIRA about this problem for Macs https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-25627

 

Here is a fix posted by Gio Solo that might help you:

 

I found a temporary solution for my Mac. Now I can use Second Life Viewer 2.6.3.

Basically I had to add the following additional DNS servers to my DNS settings in Network settings under System Preferences:

 

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

 

If that doesn`t work for you, you can go back to viewer 2.6.2 here http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Supported_Viewers make sure you also switch off automatic updates in your preferences > setup or it will just update you again.

If you are using Windows, try going back to viewer 2.6.2 as described above.

Are you able to access other rich media on the internet (ie. itunes, youtube, etc...) uninterrupted without stalling? If no, try hitting the power off button on your modem and wait 10 seconds before powering it back on. This works for me on the rare occassion I can't connect to server.

Then if Wade`s suggestion to reset your modem / router doesn`t work, try a different viewer and see if that makes a difference. Either try 2.6.2. from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Supported_Viewers or one of the TPVs from https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory

Many things can cause packets to fail to arrive at the SL servers.  You could have a firewall in your computer that is blocking communciations with the server.  You could have the same thing in the router, say, in a business environment.  You could have automatic DNS in the router but the cable people have lousy tables ( a common issue.)  Anything that can prevent a packet from going out can be the culprit.

Consider adding a few static entries to the router's DNS tables so you aren't stuck with what the cable company "permits" you to see.  http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/  has a couple of DNS lookup servers that are fast, free, and very usuable.  Just add them to the Static DNS in your router configuration, then turn your computer on.  Chances are this alone will get you back up and running.

I have the same issue with the other V2 based viewers such as V2Beta as well as Firestorm. However Phoenix and the V1 based viewers have no issues.
