Question

Hi there

Okies I'm by no means a computer geek and soo wish that I was and I'm limited by my disability of understanding certain things but i try my best to work hard to learn  so please bare with me. And be so gratful if anyone take the time to help me with this issue.

I have a geforce 8400 Gs vista 64

I noticed since the last two updates for second life viewer it has crashed my whole computer along with the two graphic cards I have in the computer the older model was built in and by my understanding they couldnt remove it so they added a new graphics card the 8400 so I have two graphic cards...anyways the issue I'm having now is I'm unable to recieve the newer updates from the Nvidia web site to go through properly it says that I have some system requirments but not the

Directx 11, #d Vision,Cores 8,Clock 567MHZ,Memory 512 MB...I have no clue what these mean but I noticed last time I tried to update the new nvidia card it somehow reverted to my old nvidia card the 6200...I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out and I'm limited on resources So only people I go to are of course are the SL nerds that know computers and can help me understand how I can fix this or understand what the heck is going on.

Also I went into my viewer and copied the following info:

The Graphics Driver Version: 9.18.0013.0697 is behind. The 306.97 is several versions behind the current 310.70.

The first thing to do is create a Restore Point. You can roll back to this point if anything goes wrong.

Download the 8400's drivers and have them where you can get to them easily. Besure you are getting 64-bit drivers.

I suggest getting the free program GPU-Z and checking your video card. If the computer has a built-into-motherboard GPU this should tell you if the computer has decided to start using it. If you are on a laptop, that is a common problem.

If the machine thinks the 6200 is installed, it is going to be a problem. Click START and right-click My Computer and open PROPERTIES. Look for Device Manager, open it. In the Device Tree find Display Adapters and expand it by clicking the +.

You should see only one dispay driver, the 8400. If there is another, try deleting it. Restart the computer and try a driver update.

If that fails, try switching to the basic VGA driver. To do that, use Google to find out how to start in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode uninstall the video drivers for the 6200 and 8600. To do that Google 'removing old video drivers.' Once removed restart the computer and let it start in normal mode. It should be running on the WIndows Default VGA drivers. Now try installing the 8400 drivers.

I suggest you keep a copy of the drivers. You may need to roll back to an old driver at some point. I have an older machine running an nVidia card and using the 169.xx something driver and it works very well. So, some old drivers run older cards better than the newer drivers.

thank you Nalates for taking the time to help me figure this problem is ... the old nvidia card 6150se is already built in the motherboard so they never removed it and told me never ever to touch it or update or fool around with that ...the new graphics card is the nvidia 8400 the last time I updated it was back in October and the updates went through with no problem at all until two weeks ago i went to update the 8400 64 bit during the usual update my screen went completely black and somehow it switched over to the nvidia card 6150 ...So i went back to a restore point and did a rollback on my display adapters ever since then when i try to play second life my screen will get this vertical colored lines all across my screen making me to reboot again and still to this day I'm unable to update my graphic card without any complications.

I feel a little nervous about messing it up even more so when you say to remove old video drivers I'm not sure what you mean by that ...ohmys there's so much to this tech stuff so overwhelms me a little these are times I wish i had a nerdy friend that lived close lmao
