This normally just means that your graphics card is too new to have been included in the text file that SL uses at start up to set your graphics level (low, medium, high or ultra). It's not a cause for alarm. If SL doesn't recognize your graphics card it will default to the lowest settings. After log in you can set things as you prefer.

However, if you're using LL's official viewer 3.0, you may have problems. The current viewer has issues with some Nvidia 400 and 500 series cards. You may need to turn off the basic shaders for the game to load. You can take a look in the SL Viewer subforum for more details.

The newest (and default) viewer is VERY VERY buggy these days -- more so than usual. So trying a third party viewer or going back to an earlier SL viewer may be your best choice. Most newer cards get that message from the official viewers although they do not from third parties. Just goes to show who may be paying the most attention *wink*.

You should of course update your drivers from the manufacturer's website too :D

Hi Skyler.

The Nvidia 550M is in the  gpu_table for Second Life. That is not the problem. The problem is that your laptop presumably has Nvidia Optimus to automatically switch between the integrated Intel chipset and discrete graphics card depending on the application and graphics requirement.

This has come up before and I suggest you try Soho SpiritWeaver's solution in this thread.

Remember also that the discrete Nvidia card will only work on mains power, not battery power

To check if your laptop graphics driver is up to date check your laptop manufacturer's website or alternatively, Nvidia provide drivers from its website. Best to use the auto-detect utility.

Update: Forget Dell, use the driver from Nvidia.
